One and a half stars (out of four)
If you are keeping track, there are only three things about this film experience worth remembering: The ultra sleek Nemo-designed automobile, the massive submarine Nautilus, and where the theater exits are in relation to where you parked your vehicle. After that, it is a blur of Matilda (the favored gun of Allan Quartermain), The Phantom, Tom Sawyer, Captain Nemo, Vampirella (Mrs. Harker), The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, and Mr. Hyde/Dr. Jekyll.
If you are bored and I have lost you, I apologize, but welcome to the club. I think very highly of Sean Connery, but I have to wonder, What was he thinking when he agreed to star in this film? In the end, fantasy is supposed to suspend reality, but unfortunately this film did not. As the movie rolled to its welcome and inevitable end (and before the credits rolled), I was already halfway to my car.

One star (out of four)
On the eve of the technological revolution of the 20th century, a group of fictional heroes is brought together to prevent a global war. Sure, it sounds intriguing, but whatever potential the film may have had completely vanished after the first third of the movie. As with the earlier Batman movies, dark blue and grey cinematography is used to disguise the complete lack of quality in the last two-thirds of the film. It is literally impossible to tell what is happening in many scenes due to the dark images and incredibly poor camera work and editing.
What a pathetically cheap effect it is to shake a camera in order to try to spice up the so-called action scenes. This movie's director and film editor should never be employed again. If the script had been any good, they would have ruined it. Do not waste your time seeing this movie.

Four stars (out of four)
If you are looking for a predictable plot, typical heroes and fake CGI technology, this is not your movie. I have been looking forward to this movie for the last year and I absolutely loved it. The basic premise is that literary characters band together to battle the elusive Phantom.
As an avid reader I loved this idea. This film is full of action and the special effects are out of this world.
The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde transformations make one think "Hulk creators go home!" The changes are absolutely inventive and terrific. What surprised me most about this movie was the Captain Nemo character. I expected greatness from Alex Quartermain (Sean Connery), but Nemo was like James Bond and his gadgets meet Jackie Chan martial arts and a little Conan the Barbarian swordplay. It's quite a spin on the normal comic-book-hero film.
