PADUCAH, Ky. — Car racing fans are some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated in sports, but a community of people looking for entertainment is at the heart of it all.
On Friday, the Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, Ky., will hold one of its regular Friday races with six competing divisions.
More than 100 cars usually compete in the Friday races that last from late March to late September, said Bill Roth, the speedway's general manager.
Friday may seem like just another night of racing, but the races are special because of the crowd they attract.
"It's family entertainment," Roth said. "People just want to be here to see their favorite drivers. It's fairly local, and everybody who cares about a good time comes to this."
But the word-of-mouth culture can also make it difficult for others to learn about.
"If you don't know what you're talking about, these people will eat you alive," Roth said about racing fans.
On Aug. 21, NASCAR champion Tony Stewart will compete in NASCAR Cup and Regional Late Model Stars at the raceway, Roth said.
Tickets for Friday are $10 and children younger than 12 are free. For more information, call 270-898-7469.
