Downtown group adds fun to menu for Thanksgiving

A different kind of holiday benefit dinner event will happen today in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The Downtown's a Drag performers will present their Thanksgiving dinner and show at 6 p.m. today at Dockside, 4 N. Spanish St.

A cash bar and mingling time is scheduled for 6 to 6:30 p.m., a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and the variety show will follow.

Coats and canned foods will be collected and donated to Red Star Baptist Church Food Pantry.

Leftovers will be given to the Southeast Missouri Safe House for Women.

Admission is $10 for dinner and the show or $5 for just the show. Tickets are available at the door or by calling Dockside.

"Expect a good meal, a good show and a lot of fun," performer Josh Yount said. "We're looking forward to seeing the community reach out in support. We want to reach out to everyone in the community and see that everyone can be a part of what we do."

According to organizers, the show will feature a variety of singing, dancing, illusional talent, comedy and more.

"This show is a fun get together and party for everyone," organizer Ashley Strode said. "We have a good group of people who are into the community and giving back."

Strode said she is looking forward to a good turnout.

"This show is about people helping out who don't get a Thanksgiving dinner," Strode said. "Anyone can come and sit down and share love with everyone else. Even if someone can't be with their family, there are some fun awesome people who are all about giving."

Downtown's a Drag performs monthly at Dockside.

Strode said the shows have been getting bigger and bigger each month and the group wanted to do something to support the community.

Organizers said the group was organized to give performers a place to showcase their talents in downtown Cape Girardeau and give back to the community.
