For anyone looking for a live music scene outside a bar, the first Battle of the Bands at Arena Park is the event to attend this Saturday.

Alex Bettinger, drummer for Cape Girardeau-based rock group Isabella, said most performances in the area are at venues that prohibit people younger than 21.

"We are advertising this show to people of all ages," he said.

The five scheduled bands play music that range from hard-core rock, alternative rock and mathrock/jazz fusion.

"It was really important to get a good mix of styles that appeal to everyone and there is definitely a type of music for everyone at this show," Bettinger said.

The goal of the competition was not only to appeal to an audience of all ages, but to promote local music.

"There isn't much of a live music scene in Cape," Bettinger said. "By throwing this show, Isabella is hoping to help jump start the local scene and get more bands playing."

Along with Isabella, the other bands performing include, Oh For Audio, Set Your Sights, Self Portrait and On Frail Wings.

Because Isabella is hosting the event, it is performing last and is not included in the competition. Voting for the best band will run until the start of their performance and votes will be tallied at that time. The winner will receive a cash prize.

The competition is Saturday in Arena Park's 4-H Building. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bands are scheduled to begin playing at 7. Cost is $5.
