Dingeldein Award nominations sought

Nominations are being sought for the annual Otto F. Dingeldein Award for Excellence in the Arts.

The award is given by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri to recognize persons or organizations who have had a considerable impact on the cultural enrichment of Southeast Missouri.

To make a nomination, send a letter to the arts council describing the candidate and his or her cultural activities, along with any awards and recognition already received. Persons or groups previously nominated may be nominated again. No age or geographic restrictions apply.

The deadline of submissions is Thursday. Send letter to: Arts Council Board of Directors, P.O. Box 901, Cape Girardeau, MO 63702-0901.

Discovery Day at University Museum

Archaeology Discover Day Saturday at the Southeast Missouri State University Museum will include pottery-making demonstrations and archaeological exhibits.

Visitors can try out Native American tools and weapons. Lisa Crews will provide a pottery demonstration using Southeastern Native American techniques.

The event is free and recommended for children age 7 and up and their families. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The museum is located in Memorial Hall.

Sikeston Cotton Carnival continues this weekend

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Sikeston Cotton Carnival continues through Saturday at the Sikeston Rodeo Grounds.

The event includes carnival rides opening at 5 p.m. today and the Miss Sikeston Contest at 10 p.m. The carnival opens at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Cotton Carnival Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the Miss Cotton Carnival Contest at 12:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Decade from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

SIU symphony takes worldly approach

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A concert titled "Around the World with the SISO" will be presented Tuesday at SIU's Shryock Auditorium.

SISO, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra, will play music from Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Scotland and the United States.

Craft fair at Pink Palace

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The 30th annual Pink Palace Crafts Fair will be held Thursday through Oct. 6 in Audubon Park in East Memphis.

It is ranked as one of the top 25 crafts fairs in the South.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 5, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 6.

Pottery workshop at Wickliffe Mounds

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- A Native American pottery workshop with ceramic artist Ann Grimont will be held Oct. 5 at Wickliffe Mounds Research Center.

Morning and afternoon workshops are planned, and each session is limited to 12 participants. Advance payment of $15 is required.

50 Miles of Art tour Nov. 2-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The 50 Miles of Art Studio Tour will be held Nov. 2-3.

The tour follows Missouri's Great River Road, Scenic Byway 79, and stops at 25 studios where travelers can visit with artists and purchase art. It includes work in hand-forged antique iron, ceramics, paintings, quilts, handcrafted soaps, pewter, photography and jewelry. Stops include studios in the Missouri communities of Hannibal, Louisiana and Clarksville.

The tour is held twice annually in April and November. It is an effort to attract artists to northeastern Missouri to spur economic activity.
