SIKESTON, Mo. -- A group in Sikeston is planning to participate in the annual Thrill the World event, where people around the world simultaneously dance the routine to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The Sikeston event will collect canned and nonperishable food items for the Southeast Missouri Food Bank and money for the Kenny Rogers Children's Center. Organizers will hold free "Thriller" lessons from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Oct. 14 and 21. The Thrill the World event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the YMCA of Southeast Missouri in Sikeston. David Limbaugh, a Cape Girardeau lawyer, author and columnist, will sign copies of his latest book, "Crimes Against Liberty," which recently reached the No. 1 spot on the best-seller lists of the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Amazon.com for hardcover nonfiction. "Crimes Against Liberty" is No. 2 on the New York Times list. Limbaugh has penned three other books. He will sign books from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Barnes & Noble.
The River City Music Festival will hold a meeting to explain responsibilities involved in volunteering at the festival on Oct. 1 and 2. The next volunteer meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Captain's Quarters in Port Cape. Jean and Larry Underberg will hold an Underberg house concert with George Worthmore, a guitarist with credentials from Bo Diddley, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Lou Christy. The Community Betterment Association will hold the "Bootheel's Got Talent Show No. 2" with talent ranging from singers and instrumentalists to dancers and actors performing. Cape West 14 Cine will have a special showing of "Tapestries of Hope," a documentary by California filmmaker and human rights activist Michealene Cristini Risley that unearths the Zimbabwean myth that if a man rapes a virgin he will be cured of HIV/AIDS. Michealene traveled to Zimbabwe in 2007 to film Zimbabwe native Betty Makoni and the work she has done to help the victims of rape and sexual abuse. Makoni founded the Girl Child Network, an organization that protects and provides counseling to victims of sexual abuse. As a result of her filming for the documentary, Michealene was jailed and deported from Zimbabwe. The documentary will air at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
