SEMO students selected for Dancing in Streets

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Theatre and Dance students have been selected to perform in Dancing in the Streets on Sept. 21 in St. Louis for the fifth straight year. The annual St. Louis dance festival is scheduled from 1 to 8 p.m. in the Grand Center in downtown St. Louis. The students will perform "Caffeinated," a contemporary piece choreographed by guest artist Larry Keigwin from New York City. The piece will be performed at 1:30 p.m. on the Orange Stage. Performing "Caffeinated" will be Sam Fink, Riley James, Leshay Mathis, Zak McMahon, Corey Meyer, Carol Saint-Amour, Connor Sullivan, Courtnee Walker and Garret Welker. The free Dancing in the Streets festival includes food, a variety of dance and live music and performances on three stages.

Monarch migration featured at Cache River

CYPRESS, Ill. -- The public is invited to take part in a Monarch migration program at the Cache River Wetlands Center, State Highway 73, three miles south of Cypress, at 10 a.m. Sept. 21. The orange and black monarch butterfly migrates up to 2,500 miles from various North American sites to central Mexico for the winter. The Monarch Watch Association program based at University of Kansas has been tagging and monitoring migrating monarchs since 1992. Those attending the program will identify the butterflies and tag monarchs as part of Monarch Watch. Those who can't attend the program may still capture butterflies the day of their visit. Orchestra to present symphony sampler

The Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will present a symphony sampler on Sept. 22 as a lighthearted preview to the upcoming 2013-2014 symphony season. The concert will be in the Shuck Music Recital Hall on the River Campus, and begins at 2 p.m. This short concert will include brief selections of music to be performed during the upcoming season, as well as an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Drawings for free tickets to the upcoming concerts will be held, and patrons will have the opportunity to purchase individual or season tickets to the symphony series. River Campus hosts new student showcase

New, freshmen and transfer students who are majoring in theater and dance at Southeast Missouri State University will perform in the fifth annual new student showcase at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre at Southeast's River Campus. The showcase will feature students presenting scenes from a play, monologue, song or dance. Faculty members choreograph pieces for theater students, while musical theater students have the option to sing. The event is free and open to the public.

Movie, discussion series continues

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Thursday night movie and discussion series will continue during the fall academic semester. Titles will be screened at the council, 32 N. Main St., at 7 p.m., and a group discussion will follow. Thursday, the Arts Council will show the documentary "9/11, The Falling Man" (2006), directed by Henry Singer, which chronicles media coverage following the fatal attacks on the World Trade Centers on Sept. 11, 2001. A schedule of films to be screened is available at the Arts Council's website, capearts.org. Visitors are encouraged to bring snacks. Beverages will be provided free of charge.
