Children sought for 'Nutcracker'

JACKSON, Mo. -- As many as 60 local children will have an opportunity to dance in the Moscow Ballet's production of "The Great Russian Nutcracker," to be presented at the Show Me Center Nov. 18.

Auditions will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at Dance Extensions, 1305 Gloria Drive in Jackson. Auditionees are asked to bring tights, leotards, ballet slippers and pointe shoes (if necessary).

Lou Varro work featured at Shawnee Anna Center

ANNA, Ill. -- An exhibition of work by Cape Girardeau artist Lou Varro will be featured at the Shawnee Community College Anna Center during September.

The show will include a variety of media, including black-and-white photographs, charcoal, water colors and oil paintings.

Varro has had shows in Poplar Bluff, Mo., Sikeston, Mo., and at Gallery 100 in Cape Girardeau.

Starcatchers looking for directors

JACKSON, Mo. -- Starcatchers Community Theatre is seeking applications from anyone who wants to direct a play during the company's 2003 season.

Any genre will be considered, including musicals and original plays. Along with a resume, submissions should include a synopsis, royalties, breakdown of characters and proposed budget.

The deadline for proposals is Oct. 15. They should be sent to: Starcatchers Community Theatre, Play Selection Committee, P.O. Box 451, Jackson, Mo. 63755.

'Flaming Idiots' auditions Sept. 3-4

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Auditions for the farcical comedy "Flaming Idiots" will be held Sept. 3-4 at the Market House Theatre MainStage.

The auditions are open to everyone, and preference is given to casting new talent.

"Flaming Idiots" is about two average guys named Carl and Phil who decide to open a gourmet health food restaurant. It flounders just as another restaurant becomes popular because a mobster was murdered there. When Carl and Phil decide to stage their own murder, the farce is on.

Roles are available for six men and four women.

Saxy Jazz to play Tunes at Twilight

Saxy Jazz, a band led by saxophonist Pat Schwent, will be featured today in Tunes at Twilight.

The free concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Common Pleas Courthouse Park. Audience members are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The series is sponsored by Old Town Cape.

'Late Night Catechism' to end Sunday

ST. LOUIS -- "Late Night Catechism," the one-nun play about growing up Catholic, will conclude its 11-month run in St. Louis Sunday.

The show will be presented at the Grandel Theatre for the final times at 7:30 p.m. tonight, at 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cedarhurst Craft Fair Sept. 7-8

MT. VERNON, Ill. -- The 26th annual Cedarhurst Craft Fair will be held Sept. 7 to 8 on the grounds of the Mitchell Museum at Cedarhurst.

Entertainment on the main stage Sept. 7 will be provided by the Old St. Louis Levee Band and New Odyssey. The members of New Odyssey play 30 different musical instruments and music from Beethoven to the present.

New Odyssey will return Sept. 9 along with The Prodigal Sons.

More than 180 artisans will display their work during the weekend. Foods include corn dogs, homemade pies and steak sandwiches.

The grounds will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8.

Robert Plant at Fox Theatre

ST. LOUIS -- Robert Plant, former lead singer of the legendary band Led Zeppelin, will perform Sept. 4 at the Fox Theatre. Show time is 8 p.m.

Plant will perform with his band Strange Sensation. Opening will be the rock band Moe.
