Cape Riverfront Market observes national event

In observance of National Farmers Market Week, the Cape Riverfront Market at 35 S. Spanish St. on Saturday will have face painting for children and two giveaways -- one for a reusable Riverfront Market bag and the other for a Ball canning kit. Demonstrations this week will be canning and salsa-making by Katey Young John from Manoor Manor from 8 to 10 a.m. and dog training by K9 Training Center from 9 to 11 a.m. Singer/songwriter Jessie Lynn Ritter will entertain from 9 to 11 a.m. The market is held every Saturday from May through October, from 8 a.m. to noon. Missouri Arts Awards nominations open

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Arts Council is looking for people, organizations and communities to receive the 2014 Missouri Arts Awards. The council is seeking nominations in six categories: arts education, arts organization, creative community, individual artist, leadership in the arts and philanthropy. Award recipients will be announced in October, and a ceremony will be Feb. 5 in the Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City. Missouri Arts Awards recipients are selected by an independent panel of representatives of the arts community throughout the state. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 26. Mailed nominations must be postmarked by that date. Tunes at Twilight begins season with giveaway

The fall season of Old Town Cape's Tunes at Twilight starts at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Common Pleas Courthouse Gazebo with Jack Williams. SoutheastHEALTH, premier sponsor of the event, will host a giveaway during the first concert of the season. Free raffle tickets will be distributed to those attending the concert, and a drawing will be held at the end of the event for a basket filled with SoutheastHEALTH swag. Future performers include Anne McCue, The Melroys, Warren Wilken, Jimmy Davis and John Latini. In the event of rain, the indoor location will be Rose Theater on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Party celebrates new ownership of Stooges

Evening of storytelling set at River Campus

An evening of storytelling, "Tunes and Tales," will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Bedell Performance Hall at the Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Performing will be Michael Reno Harrell and the Rev. Robert B. Jones Sr. Harrell is an award-winning songwriter and veteran storyteller from the Southern Appalachian Mountains. For more than 30 years, Jones, of Detroit, has been a champion of American roots music and stories. He has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with the message that traditional American songs and stories have much to teach. Arts Council holds yard sale

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St., in Cape Girardeau will hold a yard sale Aug. 23 and 24 to clear its storage area and to raise funds for its programming. The indoor sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days at the Arts Council. It will feature printers; several computer monitors; a digital camera still in the box; books about art history, theory and artistic technique; vintage magazines; vintage artwork; marketing materials; art supplies; Christmas and holiday décor; furniture; clothing; and odds and ends contributed by the public. Anyone interested in donating items is asked to bring them to the Arts Council during the week of Aug. 19 during normal business hours. Preferably, the items should be priced.
