Dr. Robert Hamblin and Dr. Christopher Rieger, English professors at Southeast Missouri State University, are the co-editors of a volume of scholarly essays on Nobel Prize laureates William Faulkner and Toni Morrison. "Faulkner and Morrison," published for the Center for Faulkner Studies by the Southeast Missouri State University Press, includes selections from the presentations made at the Faulkner and Morrison Conference sponsored by the Faulkner Center in 2010. Contributors to the volume include scholars from France, Taiwan, China and Japan, as well as 12 states. Rieger is the newly appointed director of the Center for Faulkner Studies, replacing Hamblin, the founding director, who has retired.
Students and community members may audition for the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music's Wolfgang Mozart's "The Magic Flute" from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. Auditions are open to Southeast students as well as community members. Community members who try out should be high-school age or older. Those auditioning should prepare and practice one song in any language, preferably in the "classical" or traditional style. An accompanist will be provided. The Chamber Music Sundays at Three concert series will open its 2013-2014 season with the Merling Trio at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Shuck Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Tickets are $15. The Merling Trio brings together musicians from Polish, Japanese and Dutch backgrounds. The trio made its debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1993 and was named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1994. Members of the trio include Renata Artman Knific, violin, Bruce Uchimura, cello, and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano. PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Perry County History Museum will hold its first monthly History Fest at St. Mary's of the Barrens Sept. 14 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the historic St. Mary's of the Barrens Seminary Library and Museum Building/Higher Education Center. The center is off the Highway 51 bypass in Perryville. There will be live music, historic presentations and re-enactments and refreshments. Admission is free. The Friends of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Foundation will hold its annual fall book sale next weekend. The hours for the sale are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 6, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 and 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8. Friends members are invited to a special preview hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Sept. 6. Anyone may join the Friends at the door for a minimum of $15. Hundreds of items will be available for purchase including hardcover books for $1 each, paperbacks for 50 cents, and books-on-tape and videos for $2. All proceeds benefit special library projects.
