Wild West Day to be held at Lazy L Safari

Safarifest, which is the annual back-to-school carnival held at Lazy L Safari Park at Cape Girardeau, will reflect a "Wild West" theme this year. Safarifest 2012 will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 11. Featured activities will be a Wild West Show that will include trick roping, whip cracking and animal performers, such as Festus the Zorse and Wilbur the Yak. Children will be able to play horseshoes and try their hands at roping the "dummy" steer. Childrens aged 8 and younger can bring their own stick horse for the Kid's Stick Horse Races. Don't have a stick horse? The zoo will have some on hand. The Wild West Show and kids' activities are all included in the regular zoo admission of $5 per person (ages 2 to adult). ‘Art at Night' to be held at library

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will host "Art at Night" from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Participants will create works of art with night themes. While art materials will be provided, those taking part may bring their own materials as well. The program will take place in the Youth Services Program Room. Young artists are invited to create their own masterpieces at First Friday ART-tivities. Each First Friday, artists can create using works in the styles of famous paintors, sculptors and more. Join the creative process at 5 p.m. today at the Discovery Playhouse in Cape Girardeau. All materials are provided, and no registration is required. The activities are included with the price of admission.

‘Lion King' musical tickets still available

On Aug. 16 Cape Girardeau's Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a trip to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis to experience the musical phenomenon of Disney's "The Lion King." The Broadway musical is based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name. Those attending the show will board a chartered bus at the Osage Centre at 5 p.m. Aug. 16. They will arrive at the theater before show time at 8 p.m. The price of $65 includes a ticket and chartered bus ride. A meal is not included, but food and coolers are allowed on the bus in plastic containers. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Aug. 15. For more information, call 339-6340.

Soiree for Levi's Adventure Trail

Discovery Playhouse is holding a fundraiser and awareness for the Levi's Adventure Trail exhibit from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. today at the Concourse building. Live music will be provided by the Ivas John Band. There will be a silent auction, surprise entertainment and gourmet appetizers. Tickets are $35 or $55 for reserved seating.
