Annual Barn Party set for Saturday

The third annual Barn Party will feature six bands, horseshoes and washers at the 5-H Ranch outside Jackson. Gates open at 2 p.m. Saturday. Music from Matt Steel and the Crashers, Powder Mill, The Biggest Car in the County, Chris Brotherton and the Western Plainsmen, Duke Leisure Band and John D. Hale Band starts at 3 p.m. Horseshoes and washers start at 4 p.m. Food and drink from the Pilot House will be available all day. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a watercolor and gauche post card workshop Sept. 4 and 5 at the council's building on Main Street. The instructor will be Tom Melvin, who painted the "Mississippi River Tales" mural on the flood wall and the Trinity Lutheran Church Proverb visible on Broadway. Melvin has painted murals in Chicago, Iowa, Texas and Canada. The workshop's fee is $50 a day or $100 for two days. For more information, call 334-9233.

Oil plein air workshop scheduled

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will offer an oil plein air workshop Oct. 16. Participants will paint with oil outdoors. "En plein air" means "in the open air" in French. This style of art was started by French Impressionists, and advocated by artists like Claude Monet. The instructor for the workshop will be Ann Ibur, an award-winning plein air artist. The workshop's fee will be $50. For more information, call 334-9233.
