During the fall semester of 2013, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a new Thursday night movie and discussion series. Films will be screened at the Arts Council at 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau at 7 p.m., and discussion will follow. Films were selected by staff at the Arts Council based on artistic merit, cultural relevance and importance within the field of art and design. The first offering will be Aug. 15, when the 2007 design documentary "Helvetica," directed by Gary Hustwit, will be screened. This documentary chronicles the history of the popular font helvetica and the importance of typography in global visual culture. In September, the featured film will be "9/11 The Falling Man" (2006), directed by Henry Singer. The film follows the role of the media in determining what the public sees and hears, and the controversy surrounding images of "The Falling Man" during the fatal attacks on the World Trade Centers on Sept. 11, 2001. For a full schedule of films, visit capearts.org. Those attending the screenings are encouraged to bring snacks. Beverages will be provided free of charge. For more information, call the Arts Council at 573-334-9233.
The Acting Out! theater group will hold a washers tournament and barbecue Saturday with proceeds benefiting its fall production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." The tournament and barbecue will be at Cape County South Park No. 21. Registration begins at 4 p.m., and the cost is $20 per team with two people to a team. The tournament begins at 4:30 p.m. with a $100 first-place prize. To enter, contact Sara Harrer at 636-399-0980 or email sarajo.badger@gmail.com.
The River City Players will hold auditions for the last show of the season, "Nuts, Bolts and Carnations," written by Don Rausch and directed by Debbie Barnhouse. There are roles for two men and three women. Auditions will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Yacht Club at Port Cape Girardeau. No prep is needed, as this will be a cold reading. Show dates are scheduled from Nov. 7 to 10. For more information, call Debbie at 335-8120 or email keywestgal@hotmail.com.
