Art exhibit open at nature center

"Into the Woods," a collection of oil and watercolor paintings by Vel Marshall, will be on display during regular hours throughout July at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, 2289 County Park Drive in Cape Girardeau. The paintings feature birds, wildlife and trees found in Southeast Missouri.

Nature center Meet the Artist event planned

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host a Meet the Artist event from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the nature center, 2289 County Park Drive in Cape Girardeau. Attendees will be able to visit with accomplished carver Mike Clippard while he uses hand tools to create bark carvings of Missouri wildlife. The event is free, and no registration is required.

Annual River Campus recital scheduled

The Southeast Missouri State University Southeast Chamber Music Institute will hold the fifth annual faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. July 15 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at the River Campus, 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau. The concert, which will include music for winds, strings and piano, is free and open to the public. For more information, call (573) 651-2141.

Heartland Idol auditions scheduled

Heartland Idol open auditions will be at 10 a.m. July 16 at the Osage Centre, 1625 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau. Contestants must be 14 years old or older and must have a valid driver's license or birth certificate. Contestants will be expected to sing 60 seconds a cappella for a chance to move on to the next round. Only 40 people will continue. Heartland Idol will culminate at the SEMO District Fair, and the grand prize will include $1,000 and a professional recording session with The Brothers Walker. Rev'n Rods event to be held July 19

The inaugural Rev'n Rods & Heartland Music Tour will run from noon to 8 p.m. July 19 at the Arena Building, 410 Kiwanis Drive in Cape Girardeau. A car show will begin at noon, and live entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. with an opening band and country stars Terri Clark and James Otto. No tickets are needed to attend the car show, which will be open to the public and feature registered cars on display with vendors, food and exhibits for viewing. Each registration includes two free concert tickets per vehicle.
