Murals on display at Westfield Shoppingtown

Once again, Westfield Shoppingtown West Park will be full of young people painting murals for the Pasta House corridor as part of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Murals at the Mall summer art class. Students will be at the mall from 1 to 4 p.m., from Monday to Aug. 6 and will work together to create a design that will be on permanent display at the mall.

A step back in time at Lake Wappapello

Missouri's history will come to life Saturday at Lake Wappapello State Park with "Step Back in Time," an event that will feature demonstrations, interpretations and music. Some of the activities include Ice Age fossils on display, demonstrations on how stone tools were made 15,000 years ago, a first-person interpretation of Lewis and Clark and the folk music of The Graces. Lake Wappapello State Park is located 15 miles north of Poplar Bluff, Mo., off Highway 67 on Highway 172. For more information, contact the park at (573) 297-3232.

Bluegrass and gospel by the lake this weekend

A summer of music continues at The Lake Wappapello Outdoor Theater this weekend. Tonight the theater will feature the bluegrass and gospel music of Roderman, and performing on Saturday is the Crossroads Bluegrass Gospel Band from Advance, Mo. Both performances start at 6:30 p.m. The theater is two miles south of the Wappapello Dam on Route T, next to Fisherman's Net Restaurant. Creative Arts Center will have quilts on display

From Tuesday to Aug. 27, the Creative Arts Center at Cedarhurst will hold its 15th annual quilt exhibit, which will include more than 100 pieces from members of the Cedarhurst Quilters as well as from others in the community. The exhibit also will feature the work of the Art Quilt Group of Carbondale. On Aug. 8 there will be an open house from 1 to 4 p.m., and many of the quilters will be on hand. Cape artist part of photo competition exhibit

Cape Girardeau's David Baltzell won third place in the adult division of the 17th Annual Pictures by the People photography competition held by the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The contest was open to photographers within a 100-mile radius of Poplar Bluff. The winning works are on display at the museum at 421 N. Main St. in Poplar Bluff.

Carbondale show open to area fiber artists

Carbondale's Associated Artists' Gallery is holding "Just a Little Fiber Fun," a fiber art show open to fiber artists in the area. All work will be for sale, and there is a 25 percent commission on all sales. All you have to do is bring one or two of your best works to AAG between 12 and 3 p.m. Sunday and fill out a form. The pieces must be 3 feet by 3 feet or smaller. The gallery is located at 715 S. University Ave. in Carbondale.

Singer-songwriter Godfrey receives award

Boston-based singer-songwriter Arthur Godfrey, who has brought his music to Cape Girardeau through the Underberg House Concerts, recently won his second prize at the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Godfrey's song "Amen" grabbed the Maxell Song of the Year Award. In 2001, his song "Simple Man" was a winner in the folk category.
