The Southeast Missouri Arts Council, 32 N. Main St., in Cape Girardeau will host a reception for the students of Southeast Missouri State University's 2013 Summer Art Academy from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The show will be on display through Aug. 31. This year's Summer Art Academy featured an extensive list of workshop offerings by 13 local elementary and high school art teachers and professors at the university. The Visual Arts Cooperative also will debut new works in its gallery space at the Arts Council; window exhibitors for August include ceramist Nick Toebaas and collage artist Marilyn Schwaninger.
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Multiplatinum and Grammy Award-winning artist Nelly will return to Poplar Bluff on Thursday to perform at the Black River Coliseum. "Nelly's Return" will include platinum artists Chingy and Murphy Lee. The concert will be emceed by St. Louis funny man Tew Jennings, with special guest DJ Finesse. PADUCAH, Ky. -- The National Quilt Museum, 215 Jefferson St. in Paducah, is hosting the exhibit "From the Pieces of a Nation: Civil War Period Quilts" through Oct. 8. The exhibit includes more than 30 quilts made in the United States during the Civil War era. Various designs and choices of fabric that were available during the war are showcased. COBDEN, Ill. -- The 76th Peach Festival will be celebrated in Cobden on Aug. 2 and 3 at the Cobden Community Park. Activities begin at 5 p.m. both days. The Union County Museum and its general store on South Appleknocker Street will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. "Visionary Women Artists: Selections from the Wells Fargo Art Collection" will be on display beginning Aug. 2 in the Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The public is invited to attend its opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2. The exhibit will remain on display through Oct. 27. Admission is free. A gallery talk by Dr. Joni Hand, assistant professor of art history at Southeast, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 10. The talk will focus on a few of the women represented in this exhibition. The exhibit's 47 prints and photographs range from abstract expressionist pieces to more contemporary work by female artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Saturday Social will feature pastel artist Vicki Outman from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Arts Council. Outman, a founding member of the Visual Arts Cooperative, will provide a brief demonstration and offer suggestions for how to get started in pastel. Her demonstration will be followed by a question-and-answer session. This will not be a hands-on workshop, but an informative introduction to working with pastels as a medium.
