48 Hour Film Project set for August

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The 48 Hour Film Project, the world's largest filmmaking competition which visits nearly 90 cities, is coming to Paducah Aug. 12 and 14. Filmmakers from the area will compete to see who can create the best short film in 48 hours. Participating teams will gather Aug. 12 at the Maiden Alley Cinema, where they will be given a genre, a character, a prop and a line of dialogue that they must work into their film. A fee of $160 will be charged teams registering before Aug. 2. After that date, the fee is $175. For more information on the competition and for entry forms, go to www.48hourfilm.com/paducah/.

*** Arts festival slated for Sikeston Depot

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Cowboy Up! Arts Festival will be taking center stage at the Sikeston Depot Museum in August. The seventh annual downtown festival will be held Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Depot and Legion Square Park. Admissions to the festival and the museums are free. The Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo Parade should be rolling through downtown Sikeston around 10:30 a.m., and "Meet the Rodeo Clowns" will be held in the park short after the parade ends. The festival will feature live music from Brian Fisk, Anna Catherine DeHart, Ronda Taylor, and Steve Clinton. There will be arts and crafts, pony rides, a petting zoo, festival food, and the Farmers' Market. The SEMO Explorer Mobil Museum and a Wild West Shootout will be on hand. The Cowboy Up! Kids Art Contest will be on display in several downtown stores. Art in the Depot Museum will include two very different exhibits: "Urban Fusion," a display by Malcolm McCrae, who specializes in airbrush art with many of his pieces featuring jazz and rap musicians, and Spencer Nast's "Blown Glass Experiment." Summer reading comes to end

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Another summer reading program is drawing to a close at the Sikeston Public Library. Children entering kindergarten through fifth grades will enjoy the Summer Reading Party at 1:30 p.m. Monday to celebrate the ending of the program at the library.
