Girardot National Juried Exhibition opens today
More than 300 entries were received for the 2003 Girardot National Juried Exhibition, a multimedia show opening today at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.
Juror Barbara Thompson chose 65 works by 43 artists to be displayed in the organization's galleries at 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. The show continues through July 26.
An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today. A People's Choice ballot will allow guests to choose their favorite.
The first place cash prize went to Beth Blake of Greenville, N.C., for her three oil paintings: "Minimalist Functioning Effectively," "Novice Mythmaker Surrounded by Distance" and "Seeker Contemplating Trust." Second place went to Eleanor McCain of Shalimar, Fla. She contributed three fiber pieces: "Blue/Red Grid," "Brown/Blue Grid" and "Orange/Blue Grid." Lampo Leong of Columbia, Mo., won the third place award for his paintings "Monologue 1" and "Shimmering Circus."
Honorable mentions went to: Chele Isaac of Madison, Wis.; John O'Connell of Salt Lake City, Utah; Kris Killman of Marion, Ill.; Margaret Schneider of Chesterfield, Mo.; and Leland Wallin of Greenville, N.C.
Also chosen for inclusion in the show were works by Mack Ramsey of Cape Girardeau, John Ford of Jackson and Karen Fiorino of Makanda, Ill.
Thompson is the exhibition curator of the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Southern California. She teaches ceramics at Chaffey College and is the visual arts supervisor for the Orange County Fair juried competition called "Art on a Stick."
The Visual Arts Cooperative also will have a new display opening today.
Air festival begins today in Cape Girardeau
"Heroes & Legends," the Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival, begins at 7:30 p.m. today and continues through Sunday at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.
The twilight show today will be followed by a hangar dance at 9 p.m.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the show beginning at noon. Gates open at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the show again scheduled to begin at noon.
Admission is $5 for adults today and $7 Saturday and Sunday.

Art museum offers Hitchcock series
ST. LOUIS -- The Saint Louis Art Museum will present a film series titled "Hitchcock's America" beginning tonight and continuing through Aug. 15.
The films include "Saboteur" (tonight), "Rear Window" (July 18), "Vertigo" (July 25), "North by Northwest" (Aug. 8) and "Marnie" (Aug. 15).
Shows are at 7 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Admission is $5.
Summer Family Fun Day at Wickliffe Mounds
WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- A Summer Family Fun Day will be presented Saturday at Wickliffe Mounds Research Center.
Activities will revolve around an archaeology station, a geology station, feather quill writing and demonstrations of the blow gun, atlatls, spears and stone-tipped drills.

'Cinderella' coming to The Muny
ST. LOUIS -- The musical version of the fairytale "Cinderella" begins Monday and continues through July 20 at The Muny in Forest Park.
The production stars Kate Manning as Cinderella. She last appeared as Dorothy in the 2001 production of "The Wizard of Oz."

Artists with disabilities sought for exhibit
Young artists with disabilities are sought for a juries exhibit titled "Road Trip: A Journey of Discovery." Artists ages 16 to 25 are eligible for the contest. Fifteen finalists will be awarded a total of $30,000 and will be honored in a public exhibition in Washington, D.C., in October. The exhibit is sponsored by VSA Arts and Volkswagen of America.

'70s R&B groups together in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS -- The O'Jays, Whispers, Temptations and Four Tops will perform together Aug. 3 at the Fox Theatre.
The O'Jays include original members Eddie Levert and Walter Williams and are known for the '70s hits "Back Stabbers," "Love Train" and others. The Whispers had hits in the '70s with "Seem Like I Gotta Do Wrong" and "Mother For My Children" and continued with '80s hits that included "Rock Steady."
The Temptations are led by founding member Otis Williams. The hits include "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Just My Imagination" and "My Girl." The Four Tops made the classics "Baby I Need Your Loving," "It's the Same Old Song" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There."
Both the Temptations and The Four Tops were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Paducah quilt museum hires new director
PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Museum of the American Quilter's Society has a new executive director.
Susan Talbot-Stanaway is the former director of the Muskegon Museum of Art in Muskegon, Mich. She also has held positions with museums in Wisconsin, Iowa and Texas. She has a master's degree in art history and museum studies from the University of Minnesota.
