Flutist plays benefit for music academy

James Thompson, a flute performance major at Truman State University and a native of Cape Girardeau, will perform a benefit recital for the Southeast Missouri Music Academy at 3 p.m. July 10 in Shuck Music Hall. The concert is free but donations to the scholarship program of the Southeast Missouri Music Academy will be accepted at the door. His one-hour recital will include music from the Baroque period to contemporary music. Assisting in his recital will be Paul Thompson, flute and piano, and Sara Edgerton, cello.

The Heartland Writer's Guild will hold its next meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. July 10 at St. Paul Episcopal Church hall in Sikeston, Mo. Featured speaker for the July meeting will be Dorothy Arnzen of Leopold, Mo., who has written two books: "Hummingbird" and "Until We Next Meet." She is finishing the third book in the series. The guild meets the second Sunday of each month and is open to anyone interested in writing.

A cappella choir performs at benefit

A partnership between Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. and Southeast Missouri State University will help raise funds for Old Town Cape as they sponsor a benefit concert featuring Indiana University's male a cappella group Straight No Chaser on Aug. 20 in the Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. Tickets start at $15 and are available at the River Campus box office, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the box office at 651-2265.
