Public Radio features American music July 4

Southeast Public Radio will air two specials in addition to patriotic and American music aired on "Cafe Concerto" and "Afternoon Classics" on Tuesday. "A Classical Fourth," hosted by Fred Child, will air at 9 a.m. with selections including "Porgy & Bess" and Aaron Copland's "Symphony No. 3." Variety of music offered at July 4 LibertyFest

This year's Libertyfest will feature music from a variety of local groups on its main stage and throughout downtown. Leading off will be folk musician Dan Wiethop, performing at the main stage on Spanish Street at 6:30 p.m. Acoustic rockers The Mike Renick Band will follow at 7:30 p.m., with the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band closing the entertainment at 8:30 p.m. Strolling fiddler Steve Schaffner and the Jerry Ford Dixieland Band will deliver roving performances through the streets at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. For more information on Libertyfest, call Old Town Cape at 334-8085.

Acoustic Open Mic takes indefinite hiatus

After two seasons of taking acoustic music to local venues, Jerry Swan has decided to call it quits for now on The Traveling Acoustic Open Mic. Swan cites a lack of interest as the primary reason for stopping the Open Mic. However, Traveling Acoustic Open Mic will still perform occasionally as a fund-raiser for the SEMO Acoustic Musicians' Guild.

Notre Dame to hold 'Young Author's Camp'

Notre Dame Regional High School will hold a "Young Author's Camp" for children the week of July 10 to 14. The camp runs from 9 to 11 a.m. daily and will give young authors the chance to create their own portfolio. For more information, call the high school at 335-6772 and ask for Sandy Tyson.

Garden Gallery holds jewelry-making class

Garden Gallery, at the corner of Broadway and Pacific Street, will hold a wire wrap jewelry class with instructor Pat Judd from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12. Deadline for registering is Aug. 5. For more information, call 332-7123.

Wickliffe Mounds to hold workshop on cattails

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site will hold a workshop on cattails July 8, with two sessions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants will learn how to weave cattail leaves and make a basket to take home. For more information, call the site at (270) 335-3681.

Saint Louis Art Museum announces film series

ST. LOUIS -- The Saint Louis Art Museum will present a film series through July to coincide with its current exhibition, "Remote Viewing: Invented Worlds in Recent Painting and Drawing." Films were chosen by artists with work in the exhibition. The series starts July 7 with "Stalker," directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Two exhibitions open today at Contemporary Museum

ST. LOUIS -- The Contemporary Museum in St. Louis will open two exhibitions today, "Centering on the Grand" and "Selections from the Contemporary's Flat Files." "Centering on the Grand" includes the work of three artists inspired by the Grand Center, St. Louis' culture and arts district. "Selections from the Contemporary's Flat Files" will feature work submitted by artists in Missouri and Illinois, some known and some unknown.
