Libertyfest plans include music, fireworks
The Fourth of July celebration called Libertyfest will be held once again in downtown Cape Girardeau. It will include a parade, Shrine clowns, music and a fireworks display.
The event will begin with the Patriotic Parade on Wheels at 6:30 p.m. Participants will decorate their bicycles in a patriotic them and ride through the downtown. Registration is at 6 p.m. at the parking lot next to the brick Street Gallery on Spanish Street. There is no fee.
Face painters, Shrine clowns and balloon artists will be on the streets. A Dixieland band will stroll through the downtown beginning at 7 p.m.
At 8:15 p.m., red, white and blue balloons will be released at the corner of Themis and Spanish streets to signal the start of the concert by the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band at the bottom of the steps to the Common Pleas Courthouse.
The fireworks display will begin at 9:20 p.m. from a barge on the Mississippi River. The display will be synchronized with music to be played on 960 KZIM, K103, KISS 93.6, 1220 ESPN and Real Rock 99.3.
The riverfront area, from Spanish to Water streets and from Broadway to Independence will be closed to motorized vehicles during the fireworks. Parking will be available at the Old St. Vincent's Church, the Boardman Pavilion and the First Presbyterian Church lot on Lorimier Street.
A number of downtown restaurants and bars will offer outdoor service during Libertyfest. The Glenn House will be open for tours at a discounted rate from 5 to 8 p.m. July 4.
Old Town Cape is selling Port Cape's hickory-smoked pork butts to benefit Libertyfest.
The pork butts must be ordered by Tuesday by phoning 335-1456 or visiting Tom Higgins Accounting and Tax Service office at 112 Themis St. The cost is $22. Orders can be picked up from Tuesday through July 8 at Port Cape, 19 N. Water St.
July 4 Arts in the Park deadline today
The deadline is today to enter the July 4 Arts in the Park show in Jackson.
Entries will be accepted in painting, pottery, sculpture and wood carving. All work is subject to approval by the Jackson Area Arts Council.
There is no setup fee. Work may be presented for sale commission-free.
The display will be open at City Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 4.

'American Prints and Drawings' in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS -- "American Prints and Drawings, 1820-1913," opens today at the St. Louis Art Museum.
The show includes a watercolor by John James Audubon and a rare stipple engraving of Daniel Boone by James Otto Lewis. It also includes figure studies by George Caleb Bingham and drawings by frontier artist Carl Wimar.
The show continues through Oct. 19.
Flintknapping at Wickliffe Mounds
WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Wickliffe Mounds Research Center will hosts its annual flintknapper event Saturday.
Expert flintknapper "Arrowhead" Fred Bollinger will demonstration the ancient craft of working stone into arrowheads, spear points and tools.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4.75 for seniors, $4 for children 6 to 11 and free for anyone under age 6.
The center is located at 94 Green St. along Highway 51/60/62 west in Wickliffe.
Talent sought for MDA telethon
Jerry Lewis is looking for talent to perform at his Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon. Those selected for "Stars Across America" will appear live on the telethon from Hollywood, New York and other remote locations on Sept. 1.

'The Garden View' at MAQS
PADUCAH, Ky. -- A new exhibition titled "The Garden View" opens today at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society.
The 26 nature-inspired quilts will be on display through Sept. 27.
A reception will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 26.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays (April through October).
'Coral Reef Adventure' in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- "Coral Reef Adventure" opens today at the Union Planters IMAX Theater.
Featuring the music of Crosby, Stills & Nash, the movie takes audiences beneath the sea to explore South Pacific reefs. Filmmakers Howard and Michele Hall took the cumbersome IMAX camera deeper in the open ocean than any diver has ever taken it before. During the filming, Howard Hall developed a life-threatening case of "the bends" -- decompression sickness.

Openings in arts classes
Spaces remain in two classes being offered by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri this summer. The classes are Exploring Textures and Interior Design. Both begin July 14 and continue through July 18.
Exploring Textures is open to students ages 5 and 6. Interior Design is for anyone 18 and over.

Candy is dandy at St. Louis Science Center
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Science Center plans to draw visitors with sweets in July through the summer exhibition titled "Candy Unwrapped."
"The Stretchy, Sticky, Gooey" Festival July 12-13 will offer treats such as taffy, caramel, bubble gum and other items. The grand prize at the festival will be a year's supply of Jelly Belly jelly beans.
On July 26-27, the "Candy from Around the World" Festival will offer candies from other countries and cultures.
Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and youths.

Rockin' on the Landing July 4-5
ST. LOUIS -- The Violent Femmes, a cult band of the '80s, will headline July 4 at the Bud Light Rockin' on the Landing.
Three national bands and 15 local bands will perform on the riverfront during the free event from 3 to 10 p.m. July 4-5.
The main stage headliners on July 5 will be Socialburn, a Florida alternative rock group. The St. Louis group Just Add Water will open for Socialburn.
The other St. Louis-area bands on the schedule include Joe Dirt, Somnia, Unchained, John Henry Parr, Nadine, Snafu, Poke Chop, Impala Deluxe, all on July 4, and on July 5 Elevation, CORE Project, Sevenstar, Earl, Vertigo Sun, E.M. Grueve, Paint the Earth and Murder City Players.
Montgomery Gentry, Goo Goo Dolls at Illinois fair
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Montgomery Gentry and the Goo Goo Dolls top the lineup of artists performing at the Grandstand at this year's Illinois State Fair.
Other performers include Hank Williams Jr., Ted Nugent, the '70s group Boston, Hootie and the Blowfish, Everclear, Lisa Marie Presley and the Symphonic Pops Orchestra of Chicago.
Other concerts in the multipurpose arena include Nazareth, Buckwheat Zydeco, Eddie Money, the Supremes starring Mary Wilson, and John Mayall and the Blues Breakers.
