Registration ending for summer arts classes

Eleven courses for children and adults will be offered this year in a program sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Target Stores.

The deadline for registration for the first three classes in the following list is today. The registration deadline for the other classes is May 31. For information, phone the arts council at 334-9233.

Titled Take Aim on Target's Summer Arts Classes, the program begins Tuesday with the "Soulful Cup" Workshop for Women. Designed for ages 18 and up, the class incorporates the arts and creative exercises designed to encourage creativity through the appreciation of other women artists, body movement, writing and vocal expression.

The class meets Tuesdays and Thursday for three weeks from 7 to 10 p.m.

Other classes are:

Sidewalk Chalk, in which students will draw on concrete. Ages 12 to 18. June 3 to 7, 9 a.m. to noon.

Mural Painting. The completed mural will be displayed on arts council building at 119 Independence St. Ages 12 to 18. June 3 to 7, 1 to 3 p.m.

Watercolor Basics for Young Adults. Ages 13 to 18. June 10 to 14, 10 a.m. to noon. Meets in Room 306, Serena Building.

Watercolor Painting for Adults. Ages 18 and up. June 10 to 14, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Meets in Room 306, Serena Building.

Charcoal Drawing, in which students focus on individual expression and development of techniques while creating original compositions. Ages 12 to 18. June 17 to 24, 9 a.m. to noon. Meets in Room 306, Serena Building.

Kindermusik: Creatures in My Backyard, in which students sing, move and create while learning about animal friends. Ages 1 1/2 to 4. June 17 to 21, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Parent or caregiver must be present.

Kindermusik: Around the World, which takes children on an international journey through music, movement and artistic activities. Ages 4 to 7. June 17 to 21, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Hand Built Clay Modeling. Students will experiment with techniques of handling clay. Ages 12 to 18. June 17 to 21, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Class meets at Room 29, Memorial Hall.

Clay Modeling. Students will work with firing clay and creating three-dimensional forms. June 24 to 28, 1 to 3 p.m. Ages 8 to 11. Meets at Room 29, Memorial Hall.

Drawing Technique. Students will experiment with drawing methods to practice the basics of drawing, composition, positive and negative space, contrast, value, shading and texture. July 8 to 12, 1 to 3 p.m. Ages 10 to 18. Meets at Room 306, Serena Building.

French Heritage Festival this weekend in Ste. Gen

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- The sixth annual French Heritage Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday in Ste. Genevieve.

The festival offers lectures, historical interpretations, French foods, music, dance and art. Many townspeople don French colonial period dress for the festival.

It begins with a grand promenade at 11 a.m. Saturday in which "Pere Marquette and voyageurs" are escorted through the historic district to the town square, where candy will be dispersed from the church balcony to open the festival.

Among the musical groups performing will be the Peacock Family, Patti Naeger and Les Petites Chanteurs, the Poor People of Paris and the French Cajun Band.

Among those presenting lectures will be Dennis Stroughmatt on "French Fiddle" and Dr. Bonnie Stepenoff, head of the Historic Preservation Program at Southeast, on "Another Ste. Genevieve: Free Blacks before the Civil War." Stepenoff's lecture will be at 3 p.m. and Stroughmatt's at 4 p.m. both days.

Area restaurants and street vendors will offer French cuisine. Saturday evening, a wine-tasting garden at Merchant and Main streets will present an array for Missouri wines.

The Saturday night street dance will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. followed by a promenade of singing revelers through the historic district to the town square.

The festival will close with a dinner at 7 Sunday night.

Harry Connick Jr. to play at Fox Theatre

ST. LOUIS -- Harry Connick Jr. and his Big Band will perform June 1 at the Fox Theatre in the Songs I Heard Tour.

Connick recently released the albums "30" and "Songs I Heard." "Songs I Heard," is Connick's take on tunes from classic movies and shows, including "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from "Mary Poppins" and the ballad "Maybe" from "Annie."

"30" is the fourth in a succession of recordings -- "11," "20," and "25" -- that capture Connick's progression as a musician.

Project Archaeology designed for teachers

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Project Archaeology, a workshop for teachers of grades K to 12, will be held June 13 to 15 at Wickliffe Mounds Research Center.

The workshop is designed to help teachers educate students in cultural heritage appreciation by enhancing their skills in math, science, social studies, language arts, art, higher-order thinking and communication. The lesson plans are adaptable to Missouri and Illinois curriculum goals.

The workshop will be taught by Eric Schlarb of the Kentucky Archaeological Survey and by Tressa Brown of Salato Education Center. Brown is a member of the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission.

The workshop is limited to 12 participants. The $65 fee includes a teacher's activity guide and extra instruction materials.

Lewis & Clark film to open at Arch

ST. LOUIS -- "Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West," a National Geographic film, begins showing Saturday at the Gateway Arch's giant screen Odyssey Theatre.

The film chronicles the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, as they made their way into uncharted territory nearly 200 years ago on a mission to open the American West.

Winans Family Tour hits Fox June 14

ST. LOUIS -- Together We Stand: The Winans Family Tour" featuring The Winans, CeCe Winans, BeBe Winans, Mom and Pop Winans, Daniel Winans, Angie & Debbie and Winans Phase 2, will be presented at 8 p.m. June 14 at the Fox Theatre.

Known as the first family of gospel music, the Winans' have won a total of 31 Grammy Awards, 15 Dove Awards, six NAACP Image Awards and five Soul Train Awards.
