Missouri State Fair brings in big names

The musical entertainment lineup for the 2004 Missouri State Fair Pepsi Grandstand includes some well-known stars and an assortment of music styles. Starting things off Aug. 12 is The Charlie Daniels Band; on Aug. 13 Franky Perez and The Highway Saints will open for veteran rockers ZZ Top; country duo Montgomery Gentry and Gary Allan play Aug. 14; Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline and solo artist Matthew West play Aug. 15; on Aug. 17, country star Toby Keith takes the stage, preceded by Terri Clark; rock band Switchfoot performs Aug. 19; Brooks and Dunn and opening act Gretchen Wilson perform Aug. 20; and on Aug. 21 the line-up concludes with Nickelback. For ticket information, visit the fair's Web site at www.mostatefair.com. Tickets go on sale Saturday and can be purchased at the Pepsi Grandstand box office from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Starting at 9 a.m., tickets can be ordered through Ticketmaster by calling (800) 796-6776 or by going to any Ticketmaster outlet.

Photo contest accepting entries for competition

The Lucille James Fine Arts Committee at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kan., is accepting entries for its 2004 Gordon Parks Photography Competition. The competition honors Gordon Parks, a photographer whose work focused on social injustice. Photographs entered must do the same. 'Noye's Fludde' returning to the stage Sunday

The Southeast Missouri Music Academy's staging of Benjamin Britten's "Noye's Fludde" will be performed at 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church at the corner of Broadway and Caruthers in Cape Girardeau. This children's opera features a cast of about 85 children from area schools and some young adults, with an age range from 5 to 22 years. After the shows in Cape Girardeau are finished, the academy will take the production to Minneapolis, Minn. Rockin' the vote today at The Camp

People showing up at The Camp tonight not only can listen to the music of Shadow Thieves and Hunter Brumfield III, but also can register to vote. Voter registration starts at 6 p.m. The Shadow Thieves, whose debut CD will be on sale at the show, will take the stage at 11 p.m. The Camp is at 701 Main St. in Cape Girardeau.

Lewis and Clark's journey celebrated

Starting Saturday and continuing until May 29, Hermann, Mo., will hold Passage to Destiny to commemorate the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. The event will feature living history demonstrations, period music and food, an art exhibit and other activities.
