"Animal Planet" host and conservationist Jeff Corwin will speak Wednesday at Southeast Missouri State University, closing the 2012-2013 Speakers Series. Corwin's presentation, "Tales from the Field with Jeff Corwin," is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Show Me Center. The show will feature several exotic animals, most of which are reptiles and snakes. Corwin is best known for hosting "Animal Planet's" popular "Jeff Corwin Experience," which is viewed in more than 70 countries. Now the host of ABC's Saturday morning series "Ocean Mysteries," Corwin leads the weekly undersea adventure in conjunction with the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Corwin's presentation is open to the public. Tickets are required for entry. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at showmecenter.biz and the Show Me Center Box Office. Current Southeast faculty, staff and students can use a valid Redhawks ID to pick up a free ticket in the University Center Room 202, the Center for Student Involvement or the Show Me Center Box Office.
The rock-reggae-blues quintet Stone Iris, which recently released a new album titled "Kicking the Can," will perform at Pitter's Cafe and Lounge on April 23 in Cape Girardeau. Doors open at 8 p.m. There is a $5 cover. Stone Iris was named band of the month for March by the Edmonton, Alberta, rock station Sonic 102.9FM. "Kicking the Can" is the band's eighth recording since releasing its debut album, "Ezparanza," in 2008.
The 8th annual Wholistic Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13 at the Cape Girardeau VFW Hall, 1049 N. Kingshighway. More than 30 vendors will offer products and services. Free classes will be offered. Admission to the fair is free. Donations will be accepted for International Crisis Aid.
KRCU Public Radio will officially kick off its Spring Membership Drive on Wednesday with a membership breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. in the Glenn Convocation Center at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The highlight of the breakfast will be keynote speaker Joe Palca, a science correspondent for NPR News. In addition to speaking at the breakfast, Palca also will be talking with Southeast students for a special series he's working on, called "Joe's Big Idea." Since joining NPR in 1992, Palca has covered a range of science topics -- everything from biomedical research to astronomy and won numerous awards. The Community Counseling Center Foundation will hold the 12th Annual Community Benefit Wine Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. April 12 at the Bavarian Halle in Fruitland. Thirteen wineries will be in attendance: St. James Winery, St. James, Mo.; Hemman Winery, Brazeau, Mo.; Chaumette Vineyards, Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; Hunter Valley Winery, Cape Girardeau; The Barrens Winery, Perryville, Mo.; Twin Oaks Vineyard, Farmington, Mo.; Fusion Wines, LLC, Sedgewickville, Mo.; Peaceful Bend Vineyard, Steelville, Mo.; Augusta Winery and Montelle Winery, Augusta, Mo.; Apple Creek Winery, Friedheim, Mo.; Thousand Oaks Vineyard, Marble Hill, Mo., and Rothbrick Vineyard, Jackson. Admission is $35 in advance and $40 at the door, which includes a wineglass, wine samples, heavy hors d'oeuvres donated by local restaurants, live music by The Bittersweet Band and hourly drawings for gifts and prizes. All proceeds from the event will go to the Community Counseling Center Foundation to be used for improved facilities, equipment and services for individuals with mental illness. The Jackson Heritage Association is sponsoring its annual Jackson Heritage Art Contest, which will feature images of the Jackson Senior High School football field. The awards ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jackson Senior High School commons area. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and support the fine young artists of the Jackson area.
