Southeast's exhibition of seniors opens today
The Southeast Missouri State University Graduating Seniors BFA Exhibition opens today in the Southeast Missouri Regional Museum on campus. An artists' reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition will feature the work of nine graduating Southeast art students and will run until May 15. Museum hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Tickets are still available for the Michael W. Smith Healing Rain Tour concert at 7 p.m. May 7 at the Show Me Center. Smith is a top Christian contemporary artist. Illinois Arts Council announces director
CHICAGO -- Terry A. Scrogum has been chosen as the Illinois Arts Council's executive director. Scrogum is a native of Astoria, Ill., who has served as a member of the council since 1991. He has served in various arts advocacy capacities in the state government and held senior management positions in not-for-profit organizations in the arts and human services fields.
Redhawk Concert Band to perform Thursday
The Redhawk Concert Band at Southeast Missouri State University will present its final concert of the year Thursday at 8 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. Illinois State Fair announces music lineup
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The grandstand lineup for the 2005 Illinois State Fair, Aug. 12 to 21, is set. Headliners include Rascal Flatts on Aug. 12, Lynyrd Skynyrd on Aug. 13, REO Speedwagon on Aug. 14, Velvet Revolver on Aug. 17, Brad Paisley on Aug. 19, Simple Plan on Aug. 20 and a free concert by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra on Aug. 21. Ticket prices vary and are available starting Saturday by phone and on the Internet through Ticketmaster. Sales will be open at all Ticketmaster locations on May 14. ArtsCape poster unveiled at Dalhousie Downtown
The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri invites the public to the unveiling party for the 2005 ArtsCape poster this Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dalhousie Downtown. The winning design by Beth Heise will be featured on ArtsCape posters and T-shirts, items that will be for sale at the unveiling. Ticket price includes wine, hors d'oeuvres and music featuring Vicky Emerson (who will also be appearing at the Underberg House Concerts on Saturday night). Reservations can be made by calling the arts council at 334-9233. The arts council also has booth space available for artists at the ArtsCape festival on May 21. Arts council seeking senior citizen artists
The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is currently accepting entries for "Good Vintage Senior Art," a traveling exhibit for Missouri artists 50 years and older. The exhibit will feature artists from across the state and is a juried competition. It will be shown at the arts council galleries in Cape Girardeau June 3 to 25. Deadline for entries is May 12. Nashville recording artist in concert Thursday
Nashville, Tenn., recording artist Shevy Smith will be featured in concert Thursday at 6 p.m. at the University Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The concert is free and open to the public. Smith's influences include such names as Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow and Jackson Browne. She is a singer and songwriter who is being billed as a hot new Nashville act.
Children's arts festival planned May 6 in Jackson
On May 6, area fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students will participate in the Seventh Annual Children's Festival of the Arts to be held at Jackson schools. Missouri students from Jackson, Cape Girardeau, Advance, Perryville, Greenville, Fredericktown, and Arcadia Valley will practice together from 1 to 5 p.m. at Jackson High School's old gym and will then perform a concert that evening at 6:30 for the public. Approximately 350 elementary students will take part in the concert. Students from each school will sing, play instruments, or dance at various points throughout the program. Artwork from various schools will also be displayed.
