'Born into Brothels' and 'The Sea Inside' to show in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. -- "Born into Brothels," the Academy Award winning-documentary that explores the lives of children in Calcutta, India's red-light district, and "The Sea Inside," this year's academy award winner for best foreign language film, will be showing at the Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah. "Born into Brothels" will play tonight at 9:30 and at 4:45 and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. BeJae Fleming featured at Underberg House Concerts

Ames, Iowa, recording artist BeJae Fleming will be the featured performer at Underberg House Concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Fleming's music can be characterized as energetic and entertaining Southern blues-influenced folk. Her debut CD, "Red Cross Woman," contained aggressive folk that elicited comparisons to Ani DeFranco. Call 334-7692 for reservations and directions. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Bates to play acoustic open mic at Sidewalk Sandwich Co.

Janet Bates, Canadian folk singer and songwriter, will play today at the Acoustic Open Mic from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sidewalk Sandwich Co. in downtown Cape Girardeau. Bates is a well-known singer on the folk circuit. All musicians are welcome to join on acoustic instruments from beginner to professional. There is no cover for the show. Phi Mu Alpha, Air Force ROTC to perform Tuesday

ST. LOUIS -- At the St. Louis Cardinals' Tuesday match against the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10 p.m. at Busch Stadium, several Southeast Missouri State University students will be featured in pre-game activities. The Southeast Air Force ROTC Color Guard will present the colors, and Southeast's Phi Mu Alpha Men's Vocal Octet will perform "God Bless America" before the game. Spring jazz concert to be performed April 30

The Southeast Missouri State University jazz program will perform April 30 at 8 p.m. in Academic Auditorium on the Southeast campus. The annual concert will feature both of the university's jazz ensembles: the Jazz Lab band and Southeast's premier jazz ensemble, Studio Jazz. Illinois State Fair selling commemorative items

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Illinois State Fair is undertaking a beautification project to increase outdoor seating on the fairgrounds and raise money for future fairground improvements. This month the fair began offering commemorative benches and picnic tables for sale. Each item purchased will be engraved with the purchaser's name and placed on the fairgrounds for use throughout the year. Proceeds will then be invested in other fairground improvements. Missouri Artisans elect officers at conference

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Artisans Association elected officers at their annual ArtSmart conference in Jefferson City in March. Don Crozier of O'Fallon was elected president, and Sandy Schulz of Chesterfield, Mo., was elected vice president. Other officers include Kris and Al Clements of Marshfield as treasurers, Ruth Walker of Columbia as recording secretary and Josephine Jacobsmeyer of Labadie as corresponding secretary. The Missouri Artisans Association, better known as The Best of Missouri Hands, is a premier organization representing artisans throughout Missouri. The organization is dedicated to the development of Missouri artisans through education, interaction and encouragement.

Wind symphony presents annual pops concert

The Southeast Wind Symphony will perform its annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the University Center Ballroom. Directed by Barry Bernhardt, the symphony is the premier wind and percussion ensemble on the Southeast campus. The concert features lighter-than-usual tunes instead of the bands typical selection of high-level wind literature. Discounts are available only in advance by calling 651-2265.
