Egbert to conduct Southeast singers at Carnegie Hall

Forty members of the Southeast Missouri State University Choir and Choral Union will perform at Carnegie Hall April 20 under the direction of Dr. John Egbert, professor of choral music at Southeast.

They will perform "Mass in G" by Franz Schubert and "Zadok the Priest" by George Frederick Handel.

Cowboy band to play for Friends of Music

KENNETT, Mo. -- The Sons of the Western Bootheel, Kennett's own cowboy band, will perform Saturday in Kennett.

The band offers family-oriented fun and a musical romp through the myth and lore of the American cowboy. Their music consists of real cowboy songs, songs from B-movie Westerns and original novelty numbers.

The performance will be at the Christian Life Center at First United Methodist Church, College at Washington streets. The $15 admission includes a meal of barbecue, slaw, beans, scalloped potatoes and cobbler.

The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is presented by the Friends of Music.

Wurstfest March 22-23 in Hermann

HERMANN, Mo. -- The 24th annual Wurstfest will be held March 22-23 in Hermann.

The festival is a celebration of the city's local sausage-making and German culture.

Two-man wood sculpture exhibit opens tonight

A two-man wood sculpture exhibition will be presented tonight only at the Juden Schoolhouse, 900 W. Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.

The show will consist of work by Dr. Edwin Smith, a professor of art at Southeast Missouri State University, and by Robert C. Friedrich, who teaches art at Central High School.

The show will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

'Art for the Health of It' opens Sunday afternoon

"Art for the Health of It," an annual juried competition open to artists within 100 miles of Cape Girardeau, opens Sunday.

The opening reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Southeast Missouri Hospital surgical waiting room corridor. It is located on the first floor of the Harrison Annex.

The juror was Karen Fiorino, a Southern Illinois artist.

The show is sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Southeast Missouri Hospital and the Cape Girardeau Area Medical Society.

University concert band to perform Thursday

The Southeast Missouri State University Concert Band will present its first concert of the spring semester at 8 p.m. Thursday in Academic Auditorium.

The program will include "Polly Oliver," "River of Life," "Salvation is Created," "Ireland: Of Legend and Lore" and "Hosts of Freedom."

The band is directed by Barry Bernhardt.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Admission is free with a university ID.

Visual Arts Cooperative to open March 14

The opening reception for the new Visual Arts Cooperative will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 14 at the new home of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St.

The cooperative consists of 40 artists from Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. A committee chooses select pieces by the artists to be displayed. All art on display will be for sale.

The show will occupy all three galleries at the arts council through March 28.

'Good Vintage' art exhibit looks for art from elderly

A multimedia juried exhibition of art for Missouri seniors 50 years and older will open June 6 at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St.

The deadline for slide submissions is April 25.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and the Missouri and Cape Girardeau Chapter of AARP.

'The Full Monty' opens April 15 at Fox Theatre

ST. LOUIS -- The national touring production of "The Full Monty" will be presented April 15 through 27 at the Fox Theatre.

The cast includes Broadway veterans Christian Anderson, Cleavant Derricks, Robert Westenberg and Jane Connell.

The show, adapted from the movie of the same name, is a story about unemployed steelworkers who discover the remunerative joys of taking it all off.

Workshop for writers set for June 14

The Heartland Writers Guild will present a one-day workshop for writers of children's literature June 14.

One of the three speakers will be Julia Messina, an associate editor with Cricket, a publisher that produces literary magazines and books for children through 14 years.

Also speaking is Sheila Wood Foard, whose work has appeared in more than 60 publications. She is an instructor for the Institute of Children's Literature.

The third speaker is Jeanie Stewart, a former high school teacher who since 1996 has written eight novels in a popular young adult series.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University. The fee is $60 for HWG members and $65 for non-members.

The manuscript critique fee is $20 per submission with a limit of one submission per person. The deadline for submitting manuscripts is May 1.
