Arts Council receives sponsorship for project

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri recently received a $1,000 sponsorship from the Bank of Missouri for use with an artist-residency project slated for this spring at the Alternative Education Center in Cape Girardeau. The sponsorship will help in continuing the mission and development of the Arts Council by enabling the organization to match a $10,000 grant received from the National Endowment for the Arts in August for an artist-residency program hosted in conjunction with classes offered at the Alternative Education Center. This program began in January and will feature three different artists across a variety of disciplines for weeklong residencies at the school during the rest of the spring semester.

'Juried Student Exhibition' in Crisp Museum

The "Annual Juried Student Exhibition" will be displayed starting April 5 in the Crisp Museum in the Cultural Arts Center on Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The exhibit, which showcases Southeast's Department of Art students' work, will remain on display through April 28. The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. April 5. Juror for this year's show is Clint Orr, an associate professor of graphic design at the University of Central Missouri. 'Everyone Wins a Trophy' to feature rejected work

The Southeast Missouri State University River Campus Art Gallery will follow the grand "Salon des Refusés" tradition in its exhibit, "Everyone Wins a Trophy." The exhibit will be on display starting April 5, and a reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. The River Campus Art Gallery is on the first floor of the Seminary Building in room 106 at the River Campus. "Everyone Wins a Trophy" will spotlight university students' work including fibers, sculpture, drawing, painting, print making, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, digital art and photo and video projects. The works of art displayed are pieces that were refused for the Annual Juried Student Exhibition, which runs concurrently in the Crisp Museum. River Campus Art Gallery hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 1 to 7 p.m. on First Fridays. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public. Visual Arts Co-op work featured at Arts Council

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a reception for the 11th annual Visual Arts Cooperative's three-gallery show from 5 to 9 p.m. April 5. The exhibit will be on display through April 27 in the Jean A. Chapman and Lorimier galleries, and Gallery 100 at the Arts Council, 32 N. Main St. The annual exhibit, which displays over 150 full-size works and a large collection of miniatures, is a chance to showcase the talents of the 51 Visual Arts Cooperative artists, including the work of 10 new members. Julie Walker will perform contemporary folk music from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. during the reception. Introductions of new members and board members will be at 6 p.m.

Sundays at Three: 'Brandon's New Violin'

Chamber Music Sundays at Three will present "Brandon's New Violin" at 3 p.m. April 7 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. In this concert, cellist and viola da gamba soloist Christine Kyprianides joins Southeast violin and viola professor Brandon Christensen for a concert of early string music in celebration of Christensen's newly acquired 18th century Viennese baroque violin restored to its original measurements by luthier Greg Bearden. The program is centered around the works of Belgian violinist and composer, Heinrich Ignaz Biber. Sarah Hoffmeister, a native of Jackson, who is pursuing a master of music from the Jacob's School of Music at Indiana University, will be harpsichordist for the concert. Emerging artists display at River Campus Gallery

The River Campus Art Gallery at Southeast Missouri State University will present four exhibitions of works created by the artists in the Department of Art at the May 2013 Graduating Seniors Bachelor of Fine Art Exhibitions, April 8 through May 3. The first of the four exhibitions will run from April 8 to 12, and a closing reception will be from 5 to 6 p.m. April 12. The next exhibition will be displayed from April 15 to 19. Its closing reception will be from 5 to 6 p.m. April 19. The third exhibition will be on display from April 22 to 26, and a closing reception will be from 5 to 6 p.m. April 26. The final exhibition will be on display from April 29 to May 3. Its closing reception will be from 5 to 6 p.m. May 3.

'Anne Frank' first show at new Central theater

"The Diary of Anne Frank" has been chosen for the inaugural production in the new Kinder Performance Hall at Cape Girardeau Central High School. The school's Red Dagger drama club will perform the play at 7 p.m. April 11 to 13. The play was adapted by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Ed Cole and Joe Bradshaw are directing the presentation. General admission tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. For more information, contact the high school at 335-8228.

Theater students present Directing II One-Acts

Theater students at Southeast Missouri State University will present a series of one-act plays as the culmination of their "Directing II" projects at 7:30 p.m. April 9 and 30 and May 8 in the Rust Flexible Theatre at Southeast's River Campus. The three-evening series will consist of three different one-act plays presented each evening. Each act will be about 20 to 40 minutes long. Student directors select their scenes and audition their actors. Material is typically drawn from plays that often aren't offered in commercial theaters because of their controversial content or limited public appeal. The Directing II One Acts performances are the culmination of two semesters of study for Southeast Theatre and Dance directing students. Works presented may contain adult content. The one-acts are free and open to the public.

Old Tyme Country Festival set for June 1

The 13th annual Old Tyme Country Festival will begin at 9 a.m. June 1 at the Markham Springs Recreation Area in the Mark Twain National Forest, 3 miles west of Williamsville on Highway 49. The festival will include food, crafters, antique cars, a bounce house, a water slide, children's games, rail splitting and old-time photos. Camping is available. The rock house by the mill pond will be open and feature Silvia Richmond on the dulcimer. Other musical attractions throughout the day are Ian Michaels, the Heartland Rhythm Band, 3 Degrees, Jack and Ben Becker, Seed Tick Ridge, Brandi LaRae and Jack, Second Time Around, Acoustic Crossroads, the Otter Creek Band, Hoof Beats, Bob and Barb Lewis with the Joy Scott Family and Kate and Company. Charleston group accepting exhibit pieces

The Charleston [Mo.] Society for the Arts is sponsoring the third annual Dogwood-Azalea Festival Juried Art Show April 19 to May 5. The exhibit is open to any artist working in two- or three-dimensional media. Each artist may enter up to three pieces. All submitted work must be dry and ready for hanging with attached labels containing information about the piece. Submissions may be dropped off at from noon to 4 p.m. April 12 or from 10 a.m. to noon April 13 at the society's new location, 512 E. Marshall St., in Charleston. If it is preferred, pickup in Cape Girardeau can be arranged by contacting the group. There is a nonrefundable entry fee of $10 per piece or $45 for four pieces. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. April 18. Prizes in painting, works on paper, photography, 3-D art and best of show will be awarded at 4 p.m. April 21.
