Lawyer Tim McFarland will present a talk on "The Case of Johnnie Johnson V. Chuck Berry and What Artists Should Do Before They Collaborate," sponsored by Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts. The discussion will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Bedell Performance Hall on Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. McFarland will explain copyright law as it pertains to joint authorship and will offer a practical approach to collaboration for artists. Tuesday is the deadline for artists who wish to donate artwork to a sale and silent auction that will benefit EPIC, Early Prevention Impacts Community. The "Off the Wall" event will be April 24 at The Concourse Building, 429 N. Broadview, in Cape Girardeau. The money raised will help EPIC in its work to prevent youth substance abuse. Donated artwork can be in any form, but should be easily displayed. Pieces should be no larger than 3-by-6-feet and weigh no more than 150 pounds. Tickets will be $20. Cup 'N' Cork, 11 S. Spanish St., will host a weekly Open Studio for area artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays. Art lovers are encouraged to bring their own materials to the restaurant for an evening of creating art and networking with other artists.
An art show and silent auction will be sponsored by the Community Counseling Center, in conjunction with Realty Executives, during First Friday on April 3 at the Bilderbach Art Plaza. Artists are asked to create or donate existing pieces of art for the auction. Those making donations will be allowed to attend the event and enjoy the food, music and drink. Realty Executives will invite more than 1,000 people to the auction, offering artists a good way to showcase their work. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Community Counseling Center. Those wishing to donate should contact Chris Strode at 587-1685. Donation receipts are available upon request.
