Home show opens today at the Show Me Center

The 25th Annual Southeast Missouri Home Builders Association Home and Garden Show kicks off today at the Show Me Center. The show features more than 100 exhibits and is being billed as the biggest home and garden show in the area. Free demonstrations and food samples will be available throughout the weekend from the Blue Willow Pantry. The show runs today from 3 to 9 p.m. and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact the Show Me Center at 651-2297.

Entries being sought for Missouri State Fair

For those wishing to enter the contests at the Missouri State Fair in everything from tomato growing to sculptures, entering will be easier than ever this year. Starting April 1 at 9 a.m., users can access the Premium Guide at www.mostatefair.com. The Web site will replace the books the fair previously used for rules and entries. Cape native to perform at Illinois Symphony

Cape Girardeau native Neal Boyd will perform as the tenor soloist for Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" alongside the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The two concerts will take place on April 1 and 2 at venues in Springfield and Bloomington-Normal, Ill. Boyd also attended Sikeston Junior High School in Sikeston, Mo. Events planned for Kenny Rogers telethon

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Several events are scheduled this weekend for the Kenny Rogers Children's Center Telethon to be held in Sikeston. The weekend begins with a kick-off banquet today at 7 p.m. at the Sikeston Elks Lodge. There will be live entertainment. For more information or tickets, call (573) 472-0397. Saturday will feature a SEMO H.O.G. Bike Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sikeston Field House, sponsored by the Harley-Davidson Owners Group. The telethon runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Field House and continues Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Wrapping up the weekend will be a fish fry on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Field House. Proceeds from all events go to benefit the children's center.

'Forbidden Broadway' on stage April 1

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- On April 1 at 7: 30 p.m., Shryock Auditorium in Carbondale will present "Forbidden Broadway," a scathing homage to Broadway classics like "The Lion King," "Miss Saigon," "Les Miserables," "Chicago" and "Cats." The production has been the recipient of an Obie Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award and the 2001 Drama Desk Award for Best Off Broadway Musical. Poetry contest open to Cape Girardeau residents

OWINGS MILL, Md. -- The International Library of Poetry has announced that $58,000 in prizes will be award in this year's International Poetry Contest, open to local residents. The contest deadline is May 31, 2005, and is free and open to everyone. Sedalia to exhibit 'Heroes of the Sky'

SEDALIA, Mo. -- "Heroes of the Sky: Adventures in Early Flight, 1903-1939," opening on March 28 at Sedalia Katy Depot, celebrates the 100th anniversary of flight through stories of fliers, businessmen and inventors from the first forty years of aviation. Using historic artifacts, documentary videos, graphic panels and hands-on activities, "Heroes of the Sky" introduces visitors to the inventors and entrepreneurs who had the vision to see manned flight as more than a simple curiosity. The Wright Brothers, Henry Ford, Donald Douglas, Glenn Curtiss, Jimmy Doolittle, Bessie Coleman and Admiral Richard Byrd are just some of the adventurers featured in this exhibition. Artist and author to present lecture at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Artist and author Jeffrey Vallance will deliver a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Monday at Parkinson Hall's Browne Auditorium at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Vallance's works reflect unique and genuine experiences that translate into personal mythologies, counterfeit relics and mythological travelogues. His ideas connect paranormal phenomenon to popular culture, often in a balanced mix of deadpan humor and intense intellect. Some art critics call him part intrepid explorer and part cultural anthropologist. Wood sculpture exhibit extended at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The University Museum at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is extending an exhibition of wood sculptures titled "Conceptual Carpentry." The exhibit will remain on view through April 21. The pieces are the creations of Stewart P. Wessel, associate professor of architecture at SIU. His creations range from personal to abstract in nature. Museum admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Mondays.
