Local author to hold book signing
Ron Farrow will sign copies of his book "Written from the Heart" at Hastings bookstore Saturday. He will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. Farrow's book is a compilation of columns he wrote for TBY, letters to the editor at the Southeast Missourian and short essays.
Exhibit opens at Garden Gallery
Cleda Curtis-Neal will open a new exhibit Friday at the Garden Gallery above Grace Cafe. The paintings will be on display through Feb. 28. Curtis-Neal is a painter and her exhibit focuses on portrait paintings. She is spotlighting a new piece which is a mother-daughter bridal portrait. Curtis-Neal also teaches at an art school in Oran. Her students' work will be exhibited at the Garden Gallery during March. All the works in the gallery, from pottery and jewelry to paintings, are for sale.
Program offered on artist Glackens
Children are invited to a presentation about the life of American artist William Glackens at 3 p.m. Feb. 14 at the main gallery of the Mitchell Museum at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mount Vernon, Ill. Glackens studied painting in Europe during the Impressionist period in the late 1800s. He returned to America where he produced many works documenting leisurely Americans at theaters, restaurants and at the seaside. An art activity will follow the program. Concert presents Italian violin music
The community's new chamber music series "Sundays at 3," will present the third concert of its inaugural season at 3 p.m. Feb. 15, featuring Italian music for violin. The concert will be at Old St. Vincent's Church in downtown Cape Girardeau and will feature Brandon Christensen on violin and Jeffrey Noonan playing the lute, theorbo and guitar. The pair will present a program of suites and sonatas spanning the 17th to 19th centuries. Christensen and Noonan will present this concert on period instruments. Christensen's French violin dates from the 18th century, and Noonan will play on reproductions of baroque-era instruments. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling the Performing Arts Box Office at 651-2265 or in the box office in the lobby of the Forrest H. Rose Theatre. Tickets will also be available at the door.
'Full Tilt 2004' to be presented
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University will offer a segment of their upcoming dance concert "Full Tilt 2004" free to the public at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Forrest H. Rose Theater. The original piece is titled "Anticipatory Illumination" and was choreographed and will be performed by former faculty member Josephine A. Zmolek. Patricia Reagan, art department chair, has designed the set of 10-foot silk lanterns that light "the path." The original score, composed by Robert Fruehwald of the music department, is inspired by the Southeast Asian gamelan orchestra. Submissions needed for "Art for the Health of It" exhibition
The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will present "Art for the Health of It" Feb. 29 in a juried exhibition at Southeast Missouri Hospital's surgical waiting room corridor. Submissions are requested from Missouri artists age 17 or older who live within a 100-mile radius of Cape Girardeau. Entries must be two-dimensional in any medium and should be submitted by Feb. 13. Lee Spalt, an artist from Cobden, Ill., will serve as juror for the competition. Cash awards include Best of Show, four Juror's Awards and two Honorable Mention Awards. Prizes will be distributed at the exhibit opening from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 29 at the hospital. For more information, call the Arts Council at 334-9233.
