Cape synagogue included in national magazine

Cape Girardeau's B'Nai Synagogue was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and featured in the December 2004 issue of the National Parks magazine after a student at Southeast Missouri State University wrote the nomination for inclusion. Melinda Winchester of Jackson, a student in the university's historic preservation program, wrote the nomination. The synagogue is one of only eight locations mentioned in the article.

Cello, piano faculty recital at Southeast Feb. 13

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Music will present a faculty cello and piano recital at 3 p.m. on Feb. 13, in the historic Old St. Vincent's Church in downtown Cape Girardeau. The concert is open to the public and will be performed by Southeast faculty member Sara Edgerton on cello, accompanied by her husband Paul Thompson on piano. The program, "Cello Music Through the Ages," will include a sampling of music for cello and piano written by composers from the 18th century to today. Museum to feature works for Black History Month

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff will feature the works of black artist Danny Street from Saturday through Feb. 27 in honor of Black History Month. Street's 50 paintings depict the emotions of being an "American of the African Descent." An opening reception will be held Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the museum at 421 N. Main St. in Poplar Bluff. Shryock Auditorium to feature Azugano Feb. 11

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Azaguno, a drum, voice, dance and visual art theatrical experience, is coming to Carbondale's Shryock Auditorium Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The group, whose name means "a master drummer" among the Ewe people of Ghana, was founded in 2001 by Ghanian Dr. Paschal Yao Younge. Azaguno performs musical styles representative of the songs of sub-Saharan Africa and has created contemporary works celebrating the African Diaspora, as well as expressions from the Caribbean, North and Latin America. Historic Site to celebrate Valle birthday Feb. 13

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Felix Valle House State Historic Site in Ste. Genevieve will celebrate Felix Valle's birthday on Feb. 13 with an open house. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event will be held from noon until 4 p.m. in the Valle House and is free and open to the public. Valle, born on Feb. 12, 1800, was a prominent resident of early Ste. Genevieve. He, his wife, Odile, and their son occupied the home, which is now part of Felix Valle House State Historic Site, for much of the 19th century. Refreshments will be served. Southeast Missouri State University Regional Museum's mobile museum will highlight this event. The Felix Valle House State Historic Site is located at Second and Merchant streets in Ste. Genevieve. Arthur Simon to discuss world hunger at SIUC

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Rev. Arthur Simon, a leader in the fight against world hunger for three decades, will lecture this month at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Simon's lecture, "Path to Peace: Tackling World Hunger," is in honor of his late brother, former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, who directed SIUC's Public Policy Institute from its inception in 1997 until his death in December 2003. Simon will lecture at 7 p.m. Monday in SIUC Student Center Ballroom D. The Public Policy Institute is sponsoring the lecture. Admission is free. Art Simon is founder and president emeritus of Bread for the World, the nation's leading citizen's lobby against hunger. Simon served for almost two decades as its chief executive officer before retiring. He directed the Washington office of Christian Children's Fund from 1992 to 1997. Oran native featured in William Woods art exhibit

FULTON, Mo. -- Holly Dirnberger, an art student from Oran, Mo., studying at William Woods University in Fulton, will have her works featured at various locations throughout Missouri in February, March, April and May. The exhibits will be featured at the Callaway Bank in Fulton and the Springfield Conservation Nature Center in Springfield, Mo., through February. A third exhibit will begin in Marceline, Mo., in March and run through April. Other venues planned are the Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City, Mo., in May and the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff, Mo., in spring of 2006. The displays reflect exploration in a variety of media and methods. The artistic goal was to match certain media and methods with the diversity of wildlife and nature. Muny announces youth chorus auditions for 2005

ST. LOUIS -- Auditions for children and teens in Muny productions' choruses will be held on Feb. 26 for children ages 7-13 and on Feb. 27 for teens ages 14-19. The auditions will be held at the Performing Arts Center in St. Louis University High School, 4970 Oakland Ave. Auditions take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 26 and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 27. A list of productions and a tentative rehearsal and performance schedule will be available at the auditions. All persons auditioning are required to prepare eight measures of a song and bring their own sheet music in the key in which they are singing. An accompanist will be provided.
