Spaces available for crafters at spring festival
Fine artists and crafters are wanted for the fourth annual ArtsCape Spring Arts Festival sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Old Town Cape. The festival is a one-day, outdoor juried show to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Cape Girardeau. The festival also offers a children's art tent, musical entertainment and a chalk walk street painting competition. Awards will be presented to artists and crafters with the best booth presentation and quality work. Contact the arts council at 334-9233 or at artscape@clas.net for more information. Poet to read from book on King Kong
Poet William Trowbridge will read from his latest book, "The Complete Book of Kong: Poems," at 7 p.m. Monday in Crisp Auditorium at Southeast Missouri State University. The event is free. The Kong poems are the first in a series of books by Missouri poets to be published by Southeast Missouri State University Press. In the poems, Kong finally gets to speak, giving his opinion on current events, aging, loving the wrong little woman, sports and many other topics of interest to humans and apes alike. Trowbridge is professor emeritus at Northwestern Missouri State University. He lives outside Kansas City.
Auditions for RCP production to be held
Open auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Port Cape Girardeau for the River City Players production of "Dearly Departed." The play by David Botrell and Jessie Jones has roles for four men and six women. The show will be directed by Sharon Bebout-Carr. No advance preparation is needed. Performance dates are April 16, 17 and 22 to 24. For information, call Dr. Roseanna Whitlow at 334-9997.
Piano and cello recital to showcase faculty
A cello and piano recital, "East meets West," will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday at Old St. Vincent's Church. Southeast Missouri State University faculty members Dr. Sara Edgerton and Dr. James Sifferman will play the cello and piano, respectively. Music by Beethoven, Couperin, Hovhaness, Bloch and Kodaly will be performed. The music includes selections from both the Eastern and Western traditions. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts Box Office.
Local independent film to debut
A locally made independent film, "Dark Garden" will have its big-screen debut at 7:30 p.m. March 5 at the University Center Ballroom at Southeast Missouri State University. The doors open at 7 p.m. The film is restricted to ages 17 and older unless accompanied by an adult. The psychological thriller stars Kyle Van Pool, J.W. McCrary, Caitlyn Schluss, Patrick Sullivan and Dena Sutter. It was produced by Backwards Logic Productions and filmed in Cape Girardeau.
Fulgham featured in orchestra concert
Marc Fulgham, an associate professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University, will be the featured soloist in a Paducah Symphony Orchestra concert March 6. Fulgham will perform "Concerto in Eb" for trumpet and orchestra composed by Joseph Haydn. The concert will celebrate the orchestra's 25th season and their premier performance in the Luther F. Carson-Four Rivers Center for the Performing Arts. It is the third solo performance for Fulgham with the orchestra. He has been performing with the orchestra for 13 years.
Clarinet-piano duo to perform recitalWITH PHOTO TO SCAN
Clarinetist Julie Heinen and pianist Shari Raynor will perform a recital at 8 p.m. March 3 at Brandt Hall at Southeast Missouri State University. The duo have been performing together since 1997 and have played several works written just for them. Heinin conducts frequent clinics and recitals at high schools and colleges and teaches at California State University in Northridge. Raynor has been playing since age 11 and was a recipient of the Presidential Medallion in the Arts. She teaches each summer at the Fairbanks, Alaska, Summer Arts Festival.
Theatre department announces season
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University has announced its entertainment lineup for the 2004-2005 season. The season opens Oct. 1 with "The Diary of Anne Frank." Performances will be Oct. 1 to 10. The production will be directed by Dennis Seyer. The professional dance ensemble Paul Taylor 2 will perform repertory dance Oct. 29. "Transitions," the fall dance concert, will be Nov. 18 to 20 and will be coordinated by Dr. Marc Strauss. The first play written by Steve Martin, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," will be performed Feb. 18-27, 2005. To close out the season, the department will perform the Broadway hit "Guys and Dolls!" April 5 to 9. Tickets go on sale in July at the Performing Arts Box Office.
