Michigan singer in house concert

Ann Arbor, Mich., singer-songwriter Annie Gallup will perform in a house concert Thursday in Cape Girardeau.

Gallup has been described as the "musical child of Joni Mitchell and Lou Reed."

The concert will be presented from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1122 Patricia St. An $8 donation is requested.

'Charming Billy' opens tonight in Jackson

"Charming Billy" opens tonight at the Route 25 Hall south of Jackson.

The Starcatchers Community Theatre production is a comedy about dogs, fleas and family.

The show will be offered in a dinner theater format beginning at 6 p.m. today and Saturday. The cost is $15 per person. Reservations can be made by phoning 243-1450.

'A Taste' of Mardi Gras in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Mardi Gras is in full swing in St. Louis this weekend. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, "A Taste of Soulard" will offer $15 samples of goodies from 20 Soulard restaurants. They include such specialties as chicken and sausage jambalaya, Cajun meat pies, oyster poor boys, red beans and rice, bread pudding with whiskey sauce and the St. Louis Mardi Gras' signature drink, Captain Morgan's Hurricane.

The Mystic Krew of Barkus Pet Parade begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Allen and Menard Streets. An estimated 5,000 animals participate in the parade. The Wiener Dog Derby will follow the parade at 2 p.m. offering Dachshund races.

The highlight of St. Louis Mardi Gras will be the Grand Parade on March 1. This year's parade will leave Busch Stadium at 11 a.m. and continue to Soulard. It will feature about 100 units.

Music, poetry make up a 'Victorian Evening'

"A Victorian Evening," a night of music and poetry representative of the period, will be presented Sunday at the Kelsen Gallery. The event is a benefit for the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau.

Southeast Missouri State University music faculty members Paul Thompson, Jeff Noonan and Dr. Sara Edgerton will perform along with the Southeast Flute Quartet. St. Louis vocalist Nancy Bristol also is on the program.

Poetry will be read by Dr. Tom Harte, a professor emeritus of speech communication and theater at the university, and by Brooke Hildebrand Clubbs, an adjunct professor at the school.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and hors d'oeuvres are served at 6:30 p.m. Admission is by ticket only. For information, phone the gallery at 334-0097 or the office of Drs. Pat and Jan Ruopp, 334-8884.

The gallery is located at 13 S. Spanish St. in Cape Girardeau.

JaRule grounded by bad weather

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Headliner JaRule was unable to appear at Saturday night's concert at the SIU Arena because his plane was grounded in Cincinnati due to inclement weather. The other scheduled performers, Ludacris and Benzino, did appear.

The SIU Arena will attempt to schedule another concert by JaRule. Those who attended the concert Saturday are asked to hold onto their ticket stubs for admission to the rescheduled concert.

Feathered Star and 'Man Made' quilts displayed

PADUCAH, Ky. -- "In Fine Feather: Antique Feathered Star Quilts" will be on display at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society beginning March 1 and continuing through June 21.

Another exhibit of 23 quilts by male artists, titled "Man Made," begins March 15 and continues through July 12.

The Feathered Star is one of the most intricate designs of pieced stars in American patchwork. The small triangles that edge the legs of the stars make the pattern complex and give the star its "feathery" appearance. More than 100 variations of this pattern have been documented.

The quilts exhibited span the years from 1825 to 1930.

Also on display will be the 18 winners of the 2003 Feathered Star themed contests "New Quilts from an Old Favorite."

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

"Man Made" is an invitational juried exhibit designed to showcase contemporary male quilt artists from across the country.

A reception for that exhibit will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. April 22. Several of the artists will be present.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

'Painted Prints' at St. Louis museum

ST. LOUIS -- An exhibition of prints from European and American museum and private collections is now on display at the St. Louis Art Museum. Titled "Painted Prints: The Revelation of Color," the show includes of colored version of Albrecht Durer's 12-foot-high "Triumphal Arch," on the view in the U.S. for the first time.

'The Miracle Worker' Thursday at high school

PADUCAH, Ky. -- "The Miracle Worker," a production of the Market House Theatre, will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Paducah Tilghman High School auditorium.

The play depicts the struggles of blind, deaf and mute Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan.

Installation next show at University Museum

"A Persistent Perspective: An Installation by Paul Schock" goes on display beginning Feb. 28 at the University Museum.

Schock is an assistant professor of art at the university.

A reception for the artist will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 28. The show will remain at the museum through March 23.

String Cheese Incident coming to SIU Arena

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The String Cheese Incident will perform April 23 at the SIU Arena.

Tickets go on sale at 6 p.m. today at the arena box office, outside outlets and www. ticketmaster.com.

Organist to play March 9

Organist Dr. Steven Wente will be featured in "I Too Shall Praise You!," a concert celebrating Saxony Lutheran High School and Lutheran Schools week.

The concert will be presented at 2 p.m. March 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 N. Frederick St. in Cape Girardeau.

Wente is a professor of music and organist to the Chapel of Our Lord at Concordia University River Forest in Illinois. He will perform works by J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Dupre and Vierne along with other composers. There is no admission, but an offering will be taken.

Cyrus Chestnut Trio at Jazz at the Bistro

ST. LOUIS -- The Cyrus Chestnut Trio will perform March 19-22 at Jazz at the Bistro.

Chestnut has played with Jon Hendricks, Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard and Donald Harrison. His piano playing blends gospel, classical bebop and stride with a bit of funk.

Tickets are $23 and $28, and $10 for students.
