Arts Council to screen 'Sound of Music'

As part of its Saturday Social, the Southeast Missouri Arts Council, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, will host an indoor screening of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1965 "The Sound of Music" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The film isn't rated and is appropriate for all audiences. The arts council has ample floor space for guests to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Guests are invited to bring their own snacks. Admission is free. This Saturday Social is hosted in conjunction with the 2013 Children's Arts Festival.

Fort D Days scheduled

Fort D Days will be held at Fort D in Cape Girardeau on May 25-27, July 4 and Sept. 2. The free encampments will include demonstrations, displays, descriptive markers, Dutch-oven cooking and rifle and cannon fire at the historic fort overlooking the Mississippi River. Nelson exhibit to open in River Campus Art Gallery

Russell Nelson, who was selected to be the juror for this year's annual Juried Student Exhibition, will have a solo exhibit of his work on display Feb. 25 through April 3 in the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus Art Gallery. An opening reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 in the gallery. Nelson will lecture about his work from noon to 1 p.m. on April 3 in the Glenn Convocation Center. Nelson is an associate professor of visual communications and the art department chair at Truman State University. The River Campus Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Seminary Building in Room 106. Its hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 7 p.m. on First Fridays. Southeast Hospital to show 'Art for the Health of It'

A Southeast Hospital hallway will become a mini art gallery once again thanks to the 2013 "Art for the Health of It" exhibit. The artwork will be displayed outside the surgical waiting room on the hospital's first floor. The exhibition will open with a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 The best-of-show award and four juror's awards will be presented at the reception. The artwork will remain on display until April 25. This year's juror, Caroline Kahler, who chairs the art faculty at Southeast Missouri State University, chose 36 pieces from 20 artists, from oils to watercolors and photographs to fabric art. Now in its 20th year, "Art for the Health of It" is a partnership of SoutheastHEALTH and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. Most of the artwork will be for sale. Local wine trail hosts 'A Taste of Chocolate'

The six Southeast Missouri wineries that make up Missouri's newest wine trail -- Mississippi River Hills Wine Trail -- will host a two-day event, "A Taste of Chocolate," from noon to 5 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24. Each of the wineries will offer a fine wine paired with a chocolate treat, ranging from fondue to cakes and truffles. Event tickets are available at each of the wineries. A ticket purchased in advance is $20, and $25 if purchased the days of the event; a ticket for a designated driver is only $15. Wineries on the trail include three in Perry County -- The Barrens Winery in Perryville, Hemman Winery in Brazeau and Tower Rock Vineyard and Winery in Altenburg -- and three in northern Cape Girardeau County -- Rothbrick Winery in Jackson, Hunter Valley Winery in Cape Girardeau and Apple Creek Winery in Friedheim.
