Kristopher Naeger exhibition opens today
An exhibition of paintings by Cape Girardeau artist Kristopher Naeger opens today at the Schock Community Arts Center in Scott City.
The show will include more than five years' worth of Naeger's colorful and bold abstract paintings.
He has shown at the Juden Schoolhouse Gallery, the Garden Gallery, the Shawnee Extension Center and in three juried shows at Southeast Missouri State University. One of his paintings in the 2002 university show won a Distinguished Merit Award.
A reception for the artist will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. today. The reception is free and open to the public and coincides with the opening of the center's new bar.
Work by Arkansas, California artists on display
Art by Arkansan Brenda Fisk and Californian Amy Bouse goes on display at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri today.
Fisk is the curator of exhibitions at the Arkansas State University Museum in Jonesboro. Her work consists of large, abstract oil paintings.
Bouse infuses her acrylic and oil paintings with her interests in biology, botany and human anatomy. She has a master's degree in comparative literature and for the past six years has been teaching painting at Santa Monica High School. Her work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore, Md., the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Michigan.
A new exhibition by the Visual Arts Cooperative also goes on display today. The group consists of 41 local artists each displaying a new work each month. Works by members Anita Dickerson, Zenon Duda and Dessie Gross will be featured in the arts council windows through Nov. 15.
In addition, the arts council has on display this month three Lewis and Clark prints signed by artist Gary Lucy.
A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the arts council's galleries, 30 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.
Juden Schoolhouse to host art exhibit
An invitational exhibition featuring the work of 50 artists opens today at the Juden Schoolhouse Gallery in Cape Girardeau.
The exhibition will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is located at the intersection of County Road 643 and County Road 635.
Edwin Smith sculpture on display in Anna
ANNA, Ill. -- An exhibition of sculpture by Dr. Edwin Smith, a faculty member in the Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University, continues through Nov. 25 at Shawnee Community College Anna Center.
'Saturday Night Fever' is live with Bee Gees' hits
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The stage version of the disco film "Saturday Night Fever" will be presented Wednesday at SIU's Shryock Auditorium.
The show will include the classic Bee Gees hits spawned by the movie.
Tickets are $27 with a $6 discount for children 15 and younger and senior citizens 55 and older.

Dalziel, a husband-wife duo, will perform Thursday in the Underberg House Concert Series.
Dalzel play contemporary folk, pop and ballads.

Jazz banjo player to perform
Jazz banjo player Cynthia Sayer will perform Monday night at the Cape Girardeau Dinner Club. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Drury Lodge.
Sayer has been a pianist with Woody Allen's New Orleans jazz band and has performed at the White House. She has entertained on numerous cruise ships and has performed on ABC's "Good Morning America."

'Steel Magnolias' in Sikeston
SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Sikeston Little Theater will present "Steel Magnolias Thursday and Nov. 14-16 at the Albritton-Mayer Cultural Center, 506 Kingshighway in Sikeston.
Curtains are at 7:30 p.m. except the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
Advance tickets are available at Collins Music in Sikeston for $6. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
Army Band to play in Kennett
KENNETT, Mo. -- The U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers' Chorus will perform Nov. 14 at the Kennett High School Gym.
Kennett is the smallest town on the 65-member band and 29-member chorus's current national tour.
The band will perform in Branson and at the University of Missouri at St. Louis Performing Arts Center before coming to Kennett. The group is billed as the Musical Ambassadors of the Army.
The concert is sponsored by the Kennett High School Band and the Daily Dunklin Democrat.
Admission is free but a ticket is required. Tickets are available by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Daily Dunklin Democrat., P.O. Box 669, Kennett, Mo. 63857. There is a limit of four tickets per order.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Choir to present holiday concert
The University Choir at Southeast Missouri State University will present its annual Fall/Christmas Concert Nov. 20 at Academic Auditorium.
The choir will perform "British-American Connects," "Let All the World in Every Corner Sing," "Agnus Dei", "Aililioe na Gamhna, "Sleep" and "I Vow to Thee, My Country" from Holst's "The Planets." The choir is directed by Dr. John Egbert and accompanied by Diane Wicker.
"Aililioe na Gamhna" is the premiere of a folk song setting by Mary McAuliffe, the Irish composer who visited Cape Girardeau in 2001.
The Fredericktown High School Concert Choir will perform as guests of the University Choir.
The concert will conclude with Christmas traditionals, including "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?," "O Green and Simmering Tree," "There is No Rose," "Hodie Christus natus est" and others.
Doors will open at 7:15, with the concert at 8 p.m.
Advance tickets are $7 for the public, $6 for southeast faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $5 for students. Phone 651-2265 to reserve tickets. All tickets are $7 at the door.
Free shuttles will operate between university parking lots 1 (Dempster), 52 (across Henderson from Cheney Hall) and 35 (next to Cheney Hall) and to Academic Hall.
Evanescence to perform Dec. 1
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Little Rock, Ark., band Evanescence will perform Dec. 1 at the SIU Arena.
Opening will be Seether, Godhead and Finger Eleven.
Evanescence's hits include "Bring Me to Life," "Going Under" and "My Immortal."

A Mantovani Christmas planned at SIU
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- "Christmas with the Mantovani Orchestra and Chorus" will be presented at SIU's Shryock Auditorium Dec. 5.
The 7:30 p.m. concert will include ballet selections by Tchaikovsky, "Santa's Sleigh Ride," "Ave Maria" and "The Great Songs of Christmas Suite."
Orchestra founder Annunzio Paolo Mantovani formed the orchestra that one of the world's most famous. Mantovani died 23 years ago. His orchestra is now conducted by Charles Ellis.
