Tinnin gallery to display Sikeston artist's work

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Three Rivers Community College will display works by Sikeston artist Annie Murphy Schuchart at the Tinnin Fine Art Center gallery beginning Jan. 10. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The collection of 20 watercolors, pastels and oil paintings will be on exhibit through Feb. 18. Schuchart will lead a discussion of her work during a reception at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Tinnin Center. The reception and talk are open to the public. Schuchart has studied with some of the best known artists in the nation and her work has won several awards.

Locally published book at state writing contest

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Writers Place and the Kansas City Star recently announced the winners of the 2004 William Rockhill Nelson Awards in writing. The awards, named for the founder of the Kansas City Star, are given annually to recognize literary excellence by authors living in Kansas and Missouri. One of the finalists in the contest, "The Complete Book of Kong" by William Trowbridge of Lee's Summit, Mo., was published in Cape Girardeau by the Southeast Missouri State University Press. The awards will be presented at The Writers Place annual fund raiser, Chapter & Verse, which will be held on Jan. 24 at The New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City, Mo. Local photographer donates photo collages

Joe Craig of Joe Craig Photography Inc. of Cape Girardeau created and donated two large photo collages for display in the David C. Pratt Cancer Center at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. The collages are part of the Healing Through the Arts exhibit at the Cancer Center. They tell the emotional stories of cancer patients and their families during their battle with cancer. The collages will be on display by the middle of January.

IAC to update ethnic and folk artist registry

CHICAGO -- The Illinois Arts Council (IAC) is working with the Illinois Folklife Society to update the Directory of Illinois Ethnic and Folk Artists. The directory will represent musicians, dancers, visual artists, storytellers, folklorists and other ethnic and folk artists. Once compiled, a database of ethnic and folk artists will be placed on-line, accessible through the IAC's website. Ethnic and folk artists and organizations throughout Illinois are encouraged to contact the Director of Ethnic and Folk Arts at Tamara@arts.state.il.us or (312) 814-6740.

IAC seeking artists for residency program

The Illinois Arts Council is now accepting applications from artists and performing arts companies for inclusion in the 2006-2008 Arts in Education Residency Program Artists Roster. The application deadline is Jan. 18.

The AIE Residency Program provides support to Illinois not-for-profit organizations for professional artist residencies lasting from two weeks to six months. Professional artists in the disciplines of creative writing, dance, interdisciplinary arts, media, music, theater or visual arts and performing arts companies in the disciplines of dance, music, theater or interdisciplinary arts are eligible to apply. State Arts Council offering free grant writing seminar

Organizations interested in applying for Missouri Arts Council funds should plan to attend the free grant information workshop titled "The Art of Getting Money" to be conducted in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri Galleries at 32 N. Main St. The workshops will feature tips and suggestions, information on MAC grant application processes and opportunities for questions. Though the workshops are free, reservations are required. Open auditions for "The Music Man Jr." planned

PADUCAH -- Paducah's Market House Theatre is holding open auditions for "The Music Man Jr." at 5 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 11 in MHT's Studio Theatre classroom at 120 Market House Square. Needed are 24 to 50 or more singers and actors, grades one through high school seniors. The junior version of the Broadway classic "The Music Man" condenses the major action into a 70-minute show and requires all performers to be school age. Those auditioning will be asked to sing a short song as well as read from the script. Perusal scripts are available at the theatre with a $10 refundable deposit. Performances are March 10-13.
