University Press to release Hamby book

The Southeast Missouri State University Press today will release "Gifts of Oneself: Art and Writings by James H. Hamby." To celebrate the launch, a reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. in the University Center Program Lounge, 388 Henderson Ave. in Cape Girardeau. The book was edited by Roxanne Dunn, special collections and archives librarian in Southeast's Kent Library, and Dr. Robert W. Hamblin, professor emeritus of English at Southeast. Open-mic night gospel sing planned

Southside Baptist Church will host an open-mic night gospel sing at 6 p.m. Saturday at the church, 805 Hackberry St. in Cape Girardeau. Those who sing the old-time hymns, Christ-honoring special music or play a musical instrument are invited to participate. All are invited to come and enjoy an evening of entertainment in a worship atmosphere. Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring a refreshment to share if they wish.

Classy Chassy Country and Friends show set

The Optimist Club of Oran, Missouri, will present The Classy Chassy Country and Friends Music Show at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Oran High School gym, 310 Church St. in Oran. Tickets will cost $5. Entertainers scheduled to appear include "Classy Chassy Country" Becki and Leroy, Don "Elvis" Hester, Laura Friedhof, MOJO Elfrink and Ariyana Williams. Proceeds will go toward the Optimist Club scholarship fund. The concession stand will be open.

CorTango to perform at River Campus

CorTango, a St. Louis tango band, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Shuck Recital Hall at the River Campus, 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau. Tickets are $17 and can be purchased at the River Campus box office, by calling (573) 651-2265 or at rivercampus.org/tickets.

Paint party to be held in Jackson

A paint party benefiting the American Heart Walk will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Dragonfly Designs, 2370 N. High St., Suite 5, in Jackson. To register, visit www.danisdragonflydesigns.myshopify.com. Click the link to "Paint Parties," scan down to "SoutheastHEALTH for American Heart Walk Paint Party," choose the date and artwork option and then plan to have fun. There will be four design options, and the cost is $40 per person. The 2017 American Heart Walk will be March 4 at the Southeast Missouri State University Recreation Center.

Arts Council presents Red Night Light

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will present its second Red Night Light of the season featuring Jim Beise and the topic "Creative Soul" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Arts Council, 16 N. Spanish St. in Cape Girardeau. Beise lived with his family in Paris for 12 years, working as a pastor among artists and creative professionals. He founded and was executive director of La Fonderie, an arts initiative, which exists "to value, encourage, inspire and embolden Christians working in the arts." The event is free and open to the public. Topics and discussion are intended for a mature audience.

'Heroes, Villains, Monsters' coming

"Heroes, Villains, Monsters," an art exhibit showcasing the work of comic-book artists Rick Burchett, Paul Gulacy, Terese Nielsen and William Stout, will be on display from Nov. 11 through Jan. 29 in the River Campus Museum, 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau.

Cape Mini-Comic Con to be held

A mini-comic con will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 12 in the River Campus Museum, 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau. The free event will include an artist talk, panel discussions, musical performances, vendors, artist displays and a comic art drawing contest and display. This event is in partnership with Cape Comic Con and coincides with the "Heroes, Villains, Monsters" exhibit in the museum.
