'Messiah' to be presented Tuesday at SEMO

Handel's "Messiah," will be presented at 8 p.m. Tuesday by the Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University.

Fewer than 80 unsold seats remain.

The Choral Union, University Choir and University Orchestra at Southeast will perform. The choral groups are directed by Dr. John Egbert. The symphony is directed by Dr. Sara Edgerton.

Soloists will be Lori Shaffer, Dr. Leslie Jones, Dr. Christopher Goeke and Thomas Lowery.

Magnolia Manor Holiday House begins today

CAIRO, Ill. -- The historic Magnolia Manor will hold its 51st annual Holiday House beginning today and continuing through Dec. 7. The Victorian mansion will be decorated for the season.

New Age pianist to perform tonight

Southern Illinois New Age pianist Zola Van will perform selections from her new CD, "Carol: A Christmas Journey," tonight in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Van, who lives in Herrin, will play from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Patricia Ann's, 130 N. Main St. Copies of her new CD will be for sale.

The CD includes well-known and lesser-known carols. The photographs in the CD insert were taken at the Giant City Lodge.

Van's previous CD, "Paint the Forest Winter," was the No. 1 CD on New Age radio in 2002.

Sheryl Crow to speak at banquet

KENNETT, Mo. -- Kennett native, former elementary school teacher and nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow will speak Monday at the Kennett Area Higher Education Center's 2003 Banquet Celebration.

The banquet is designed to raise funds to support the KAHEC Endowment Scholarship Fund and to buy furnishings in the new addition at the Kennett Center. A new science lab and a traditional classroom are scheduled to open in the spring.

Enrollment at KAHEC has jumped from 170 in the fall of 2000 to 922 this fall.

Concert of folk dances scheduled for Thursday

The Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present a concert based on folk dances Thursday at Academic Auditorium.

The program includes "Yiddish Dances" by composer Adam Gorb and British composer Michael Hesketh's suite based on folk dances from the Middle Ages.

Bobby Abernathy, a senior music major from Jackson, will conduct a brass ensemble work, and the ensemble will give the American premiere of a new march by Japanese composer Hiroshi Hoshina.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra and Southern Illinois University Concert Choir and Choral Union will perform Handel's "Messiah" Thursday at SIU's Shryock Auditorium.

The annual faculty exhibition by the Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University opens Monday and continues through Jan. 25 at the University Museum.

Voce Festiva in Christmas concert Dec. 6

Voce Festiva will present a program of choral music for women's voices Dec. 6.

The concert will offer the premiere of "The Friendly Beasts," a work arranged especially for Voce Festiva by Dr. Steve Hendricks.

The concert also will include Southern hymn tune settings by Stephanie Fridley along with solos and duets by members of the ensemble. The rarely performed medieval polyphonic chants in "The Legend of St. Nicholas" will be complemented by traditional holiday favorites.

Ensemble members are sopranos Stephanie Fridley, Mary Mims and Lori Shaffer, altos Hays Hendricks, Dr. Leslie Jones and Christy Shinn. Piano accompaniment will be by Dr. John Shelton, a professor emeritus of music at Southeast Missouri State University.

The free concert will begin at 4 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1900 La Croix Road in Cape Girardeau.

Pocahontas artisans guild to present crafts

POCAHONTAS, Mo. -- The Bonney Bank Artisans Guild of Pocahontas will present a display of fine crafts Dec. 6-7.

The hand-made items will be displayed at historic Bonney Bank from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 and from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 7.

The participating artists include Sally Blankenship, Anne Foust, Robin Hankinson, Diana Lilly, Judy Naeter, Julie Bricknell, Jean Hall, Amy Kephart, Gloria Miller, Pat Reagan and Helen Towner.

Gift show, parade planned in Chaffee Dec. 6,7

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A Holiday Gift Show will be presented Dec. 6 and 7 at the River City CB Club Activity Center, 113 and 115 W. Yoakum in Chaffee.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 7.

Chaffee's annual Christmas Parade will begin at 1 p.m. Dec. 6.

The Christmas Home Tour sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Lutheran Family and Children's Services will be presented Dec. 6.

A candlelight tour of the Oliver House in Jackson will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Open house tours of the historic former home of Missouri flag creator Marie Oliver also will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, and from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.

The Oliver House is located at 224 E. Adams St.

Jackson Christmas Parade planned for Dec. 6

The annual Jackson Christmas Parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 6. The theme is planned to be "Christmas Around the World."

The Jackson Jaycees sponsor the parade. Anyone who wants to enter a float can call the Jackson Chamber of commerce at 243-8131.
