River City Players announce Abbott Awards

The River City Players announced its annual Abbott Awards on Saturday. Winners were Laura Turner, best supporting actress for "A Few Good Men"; Seth Keith, best supporting actor for "A Few Good Men"; Carly Pind, best actress for "Wait Until Dark"; Steve Ruppel, best actor for "Harvey"; "A Few Good Men," best show, directed by Lloyd Williams with assistant director Christine Beardslee; Lisa Letner, unsung hero for her behind-the-scenes work; and Chuck Ross, who received the President's Choice Award for his years of service in the Players. The shows for the upcoming season were also announced, with "Greater Tuna," "Wise Women," "The Real Thing," "Fences" and "Nuncrackers: A Nunsense Christmas Play." "Young Louis Lorimier" will round out the offerings for LibertyFest.

Jackson High to perform 'A Christmas Carol'

Jackson High School will present Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol," with an updated look featuring laser lights and the sounds of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3. For more information or tickets, call the school at 243-9513.

Central High School gets ready to Feaste

Central High School in Cape Girardeau will hold its annual Madrigal Feaste at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9 in the high school commons. Catering will be provided by Celebrations. Reservations should be made by Dec. 5. For more information or reservations, call 335-8228.

Jackson heritage group displaying artwork

The Jackson Heritage Association will feature work from finalists in its 2006 Art Contest starting Dec. 1 at the C.H. Wolters Harness Shop in Jackson.

New Orleans musician coming to Cape Girardeau

Jason Greenwald, a Tulane University student who has been touring the country in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, will appear in Cape Girardeau on Dec. 2 and 3 playing two shows at the Rude Dog Pub with the Mike Renick Band. Cape man named state director of swing society

Cape Girardeau resident Bob Dolle was recently appointed as the state director of Missouri for the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest. The group has more than 1,000 members. Dolle also has a western swing showcase planned to be held in Cape Girardeau in May.

Lake Wappapello holding annual light festival

WAPPAPELLO, Mo. -- Lake Wappapello will start its Christmas celebration today with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 13th annual Festival of Lights Christmas Auto Tour through the Redman Creek Campground. The tour will be open Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. through Dec. 11. The tour will be open nightly from Dec. 16 to 25 from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday night the Wappapello Music Barn will have music from Jackson natives The Riverman Gospel Quartet at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call (573) 222-8083.

Ste. Genevieve Art Guild holding show and sale
