'Celebrity Celebrations' auditions Sunday

Auditions for the upcoming production of "Celebrity Celebrations" by Starcatchers Community Theatre will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

"Celebrity Celebrations" is a murder mystery dinner theater with audience participation. Among the celebrity guests for whom parts will be cast are: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Judy Garland, Bruce Lee, Rita Hayworth, Groucho Marx, Lucille Ball, Bob Marley and Patsy Cline.

Minimal line memorization will be required.

The first rehearsals will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The play will be presented Dec. 31 and Jan. 2 and 3 at Delmonico's Restaurant in Jackson.

Auditions will be held in the Conference Room of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce Building.

'Great Russian Nutcracker' Tuesday

The Moscow Ballet's "Great Russian Nutcracker" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Show Me Center.

The ballet features hand-painted sets and 400 different costumes. Phone 651-5000 for information.

Art exhibit tonight at Juden Schoolhouse

Artwork by Matt Miller and Lars Peterman will be exhibited tonight only from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Juden Schoolhouse Gallery.

The gallery is located at the intersection County Road 635 and West Cape Rock Drive in Cape Girardeau.

Miller will be showing metal sculpture, including one work 8 feet tall. Peterman will be showing drawings.

Both are graduates of Central High School and products of the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art.

Textile exhibit on display in Ullin

ULLIN, Ill. -- A textile exhibit titled "Software Behind Glass" by Richard Cox is on display through Dec. 4 at the Shawnee Community College Main Campus Art Gallery in Ullin.

'Holiday with the Pops' presented Dec. 3

KFVS-TV anchorwoman Amy Jacquin will be the guest narrator for the telling of the "Christmas Story" when "Holiday with the Pops" is presented Dec. 3.

The show by the Heartland Pops Orchestra and Chorus will include 24 orchestra members and a 21-voice chorus. Among the numbers they will perform are traditional Christmas songs along with sections from Mozart's "Coronation Anthem." There will be an audience sing-along.

The Heartland Victorian Voices, a six-person a capella madrigal group, also will perform along with the Heartland Childrens Chorus from Dexter, Mo.

The show will be presented at 7 p.m. at Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

The production is directed by Jerry Ganiel, music minister at Immaculate conception Church in Jackson. For information, phone 238-4891 or 579-6127.

RCP presents Abbott Awards

The River City Players community theater presented the Abbott Awards Saturday night after a banquet at the River City Yacht Club. Receiving awards were: Meredith Elfrink, Best Supporting actress for "Sylvia;" Stacey Storey, Best Actress in "Same Time Next Year;" Roseanna Whitlow, Best Show for "Sylvia" and Best Directing for "Sylvia;" Elle Anders, Unsung Hero and Best Co-director for "Sylvia;" Keith West, President's Choice; Jeff Statler, Best Actor for "Same Time Next Year." Receiving certificates for participating in the River City Players Follies were: Kassi Lynn, Debbie Barnhouse, Wayne Heiser, Chuck Ross, Randy Barnhouse, Jean Sokolofski and Dale Pruett.

The Runaways to reunite in Cape Girardeau

The Runaways, a legendary Cape Girardeau rock 'n' roll band, will play a reunion dance Saturday night at the River City Yacht Club in Cape Girardeau.

The band broke up about 10 years ago after decades of entertaining audiences throughout the region. Different musicians who played in the band through the years will sit in.

The dance is free and will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Handel's 'Messiah' nearly sold out

Only a few tickets remain for the Dec. 2 performance of Handel's "Messiah" by the Choral Union, University Choir and University Orchestra at Southeast Missouri State University.

Soloists will be Lori Shaffer, Dr. Leslie Jones, Dr. Christopher Goeke and Thomas Lowery. The concert will be conducted by Dr. John B. Egbert.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Academic Auditorium. Shuttle buses will run from parking lots from 7:15 p.m. until about 9:15 p.m. Phone 651-2265 for information.
