Mycoskie to speak at Southeast Nov. 12

Blake Mycoskie will speak at Southeast Missouri State University as part of its Speakers Series at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Show Me Center. His presentation is titled "Start Something That Matters." General admission tickets are $10 and can be bought at showmecenter.biz and the Show Me Center box office. Southeast faculty, staff and students can use a valid Redhawks ID to pick up a free ticket in the University Center room 202, the Center for Student Involvement, or the Show Me Center box office. Mycoskie is the founder and "Chief Shoe Giver" of TOMS, and the person behind the One for One model, which has turned into a global movement. TOMS has given more than 10 million pairs of new shoes to needy children since it began in 2006. The company recently expanded to include TOMS Eyewear, helping to give sight to more than 150,000 people around the world.

University, Chamber Choir concert is Nov. 7

The Southeast Missouri State University Choir and Chamber Choir will perform together at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast's River Campus. The performance will last one hour. The University Choir, which features 42 students, is open to all Southeast students by audition. It is the premiere vocal ensemble at the university. It focuses on music from the Renaissance era to the present. The Chamber Choir has eight members, is open by audition and performs choral music appropriate to a small group. It focuses on music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Tickets for the concert can be bought at the River Campus box office in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, or by calling 651-2265. Tickets may also be bought online at rivercampusevents.com.

Music Academy sets 'Standing Ovation'

The Southeast Missouri Music Academy will present its 14th annual "Standing Ovation" benefit concert at 4 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. After the concert, a champagne and chocolate reception will be at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. The featured performer at the concert is the Southeast Brass Quintet, playing arrangements from the music of the world-famous Canadian Brass. In addition, the program will include Dr. Kevin Hampton, piano, new chairman of the Department of Music, and Dr. Gabrielle Baffoni, clarinet. Jessie-Reuter Yount will perform selections from the literature of Faure, arranged for French horn and piano by her husband, Matt Yount. New this year is a performance by Academy alumni, who have become prominent local musicians. Christy Roethemeyer Shinn and Beth Roethemeyer St. John, music directors in Jackson, will perform vocal selections. The Music Academy will showcase one of its stars, Daniel Bollig, 14, from Carbondale, Ill. Bollig has studied cello since age 7 and has studied at the Music Academy with Sara Edgerton, director of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra, for three years. He is the son of Dr. John and Robynne Bollig. Tickets for "Standing Ovation, the largest fundraiser for the Music Academy, may be purchased at the River Campus box office in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Parade of Lights to usher holiday season

Old Town Cape will host the 22nd annual Parade of Lights on Dec. 1; the theme is "Christmas Fun for Everyone." The parade will begin about 5 p.m. or dusk. The parade route starts at Capaha Park and proceeds east on Broadway, turns right on Main Street and ends at Merriwether Street. Onlookers are encouraged to bring toys to donate to the Toys for Tots program through the Marine Corps League. The Marines will walk the parade route to collect the toys. Last year, Old Town Cape helped collect more than 500 toys for the program. Entries in the parade are limited to the first 100 applicants, and each must be lighted and play or sing Christmas music. Roller Girls close year with Smackdown

Closing another exciting year of roller-derby action, the fourth annual Capetown Smackdown will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Arena Building. In this last bout of the season, the Cape Girardeau Roller Girls, with a record of 8-2, will challenge each other, splitting into two teams in a battle for bragging rights. Tickets are $7 in advance and $9 at the door. They can be bought at Pitters Café and Lounge, PMac Music, online at brownpapertickets.com or from any Cape Girardeau roller girl. A portion of the sales will be donated to Room for One More, which helps orphan children all over the world find loving families. Arts, crafts event set for two locations

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a holiday favorite, the 43rd annual Arts and Crafts Extravaganza, on Nov. 23 and 24 at the Osage Centre and Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. This show will feature more than 300 high-quality crafters, including many of the finest artisans from across the Midwest. Last year, an estimated 14,000 visitors came through the doors at both locations, making it one of the largest craft fairs in Southeast Missouri. Each booth must sell only handmade items and must pass a rigorous inspection process to participate. After the inspection, judges will select and name one booth "Best of Show" at each location. This year's show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 23 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 24. One ticket is good for admission to both locations. Cost for Saturday and Sunday is $5. Sunday is $3.
