PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The grand finale event of Heartland Talent Showcase will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Perry Parks Center in Perryville. Heartland Talent Showcase hosts talent shows throughout Southeast Missouri from April to September, with the winners of these competitions taking part in the grand finale. Forty people will compete in three age divisions: Junior Division, open to children age 6 to 11; Intermediate, age 12 to 16; and Senior, age 17 to 22. Those who place in the grand finale will receive cash prizes.
Robert Fruehwald, Southeast Missouri State University professor of music, has received an honorable mention for his opera "Double Blind Sided" from The American Prize competition. His work was recognized in the professional theater works division. The American Prize is a series of new, not-for-profit competitions that recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the country.
The Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University will partner with the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center to present three events highlighting the art of plein-air painting. They will include a plein-air painting workshop, a book presentation, and an opportunity for the public to watch plein-air artists at work. The workshop will be Oct. 24 to 26, with Billy O'Donnell as lead artist, and will be at the River Campus and at the nature center. A $50 deposit is required, and the remaining fee of $270 is due Oct. 24. For more information about the workshop or to register, phone the museum at 651-2260. The nature center will host Karen Glines, author of "Painting Missouri," and O'Donnell for a free book presentation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24. The book contains 115 of O'Donnell's paintings. Finally, from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25, the public may watch workshop participants as they work at the Cape Girardeau Nature Center. Some of O'Donnell's landscape paintings will be on display. This event is free to the public.
The work of Cape Girardeau native Vicki Rueseler Overstreet will be on display at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, during October. The collection will include plein-air pieces depicting landscapes and urban scenes in Overstreet's impressionist style.
Breanna Bright, author of the paranormal-horror novel "In the End" -- the first in a series of three novels -- from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, will share spooky tales she uncovered in researching her books. Guests may bring copies of Bright's book for her to sign after the talk. The book will be on sale at the Arts Council for $17.
Michael Baird and Liz Montgomery will lead a sculpture walk on Broadway beginning at 11 a.m. Oct. 11. They will discuss the sculptures that make up the Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition and the artists who created them. More information about the walk soon will be announced.
Cape Comic Con and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, will team for a "Concept to Costume Workshop," from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 18. Costume designers Desiree Cosplay and Becky Brown Clements will direct the workshop.
Oct. 11 is the deadline for those wishing to submit artwork for the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's 2015 calendar. Submission information is at capearts.org/2015Calendar.aspx.

The Cape Girardeau Public Art Committee is asking qualified sculptors to submit artwork for the 2015 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.
