The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is hosting the Plein Air Paint Out, with $1,200 in prizes, at 9 a.m. Sunday at Jones Heritage Farm and Market in Cape Girardeau. Three people will go toe-to-toe in a conversation and debate about the "Jun Kaneko" exhibit in the Crisp Museum. The "Art Slam!" encourages audience participation and means to spark conversations about art. Benjie Heu, a Southeast Missouri State University professor of art, Stephanie Lynch, director of public relations and marketing with the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Dr. Melissa Odegard, assistant professor of educational leadership and counseling will lead the free event. The "Art Slam!" will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Crisp Museum.
The Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company will perform traditional Bayanihan dances at the River Campus. The Bayanihan group is the oldest dance company in the Philippines. It has won several awards and was the first non-American dance company to perform at the New York State Theater of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Bedell Performance Hall. Tickets are $35 and $29 and available at the River Campus box office, calling 651-2265, or at metrotix.com keyword "Philippine."
The River Campus continues its touring series with a one-night performance of "Fiddler on the Roof." The musical about a poor milkman trying to control his five daughters, who stray further and further from their religious upbringing. The show, featuring familiar songs like "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" and "If I Were a Rich Man," will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bedell Performance Hall. The Community Betterment Association will hold the "Bootheel's Got Talent Show No. 2" with talent ranging from singers and instrumentalists to dancers and actors. Carl Kasell, the host of NPR's "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me!," will be present for a patrons dinner, a public address and reception Oct. 25 at the River Campus. Kasell will also be in the KRCU studios for the fall fundraising campaign kickoff Oct. 26. The public address from 8 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25 is free. The patrons dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. features a five-course meal, preferred seating for the address, entrance to the reception and a souvenir portrait and frame. The 20th anniversary reception after the public address will have champagne and dessert from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at KRCU studios or at 651-5070.
