Elvis Presley birthday celebration tonight

The Cape Girardeau/Jackson area Optimists will hold a birthday celebration in honor of Elvis Presley's 70th birthday tonight at Bingo World in Cape Girardeau. Bingo will start at 6:30 p.m., with Elvis music and decorations. There will be special Elvis pull tabs on sale and daubers with four different Elvis labels. There will also be Elvis trivia throughout the evening, with prizes awarded. At intermission (roughly 7:30 p.m.) an Elvis impersonator will be present. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. extravaganza Jan. 13

The third annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Extravaganza will provide entertainment from a host of area performers and orators on Jan. 13 in tribute to King at the Osage Community Centre. The event begins at 7 p.m., and admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City-Wide Celebration Committee. Cache River Basin winery presents murder mystery

VIENNA, Ill. -- The Cache River Basin Vineyard and Winery will present a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater on Jan. 15 titled "Who Killed Capt. Kirk?" Dinner starts at 7 p.m., and patrons should arrive between 6 and 7 p.m. The price of admission includes a glass of wine or soda, a buffet dinner and the show. For reservations, call (618) 658-2274.

Arts Council, Southeast Hospital seeking entries

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Southeast Missouri Hospital are accepting applications for their annual juried exhibition "Art for the Health of It." The art will be shown from Feb. 27 through April 27 with two-dimensional multimedia works to be displayed in the hospital's surgical waiting room corridor. Prospectuses and entry forms are available at the Arts Council at 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 11.

Paducah Symphony performing Jan. 15

Burnin' Daylight to play at Sidewalk Sandwich Co.

Cantrells to appear at Underberg House Concert

The Cantrells will kick off the Underberg House Concerts' 2005 season on Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Cantrells, a Nashville, Tenn.-based duo, have consistently been one of Underberg's most popular acts. Al Cantrell provides fiddle, mandolin and background vocals and Emily plays guitar and sings lead. Since their last visit to Cape Girardeau, they have released their fourth CD, "The Heart Wants what it Wants," and will feature their new work along with some old favorites. V-Day Cape Girardeau to hold auditions Jan. 22

V-Day Cape Girardeau 2005 will be having auditions for a benefit production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" on Jan. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Hirsch Community Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, no advance preparation is necessary. V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.
