'Sinatra Songbook' to start Monday

"A Sinatra Songbook," a series celebrating Frank Sinatra's seven decades of recordings, will begin airing Monday evening on KRCU 90.9 FM.

The show is hosted by Mark Sudock, a three-time Emmy winner who has produced several television features on the singer.

Sudock said his goal in the series is to program the recordings as Sinatra would have performed them live.

The show will be broadcast from 7 to 8 p.m.

Choral Union to begin rehearsals Jan. 21

The Southeast Missouri State University Choral Union will begin rehearsing Jan. 21 for a May concert titled "Viennese Classics."

The program will include Franz Schubert's Mass in G and Beethoven's "Gloria," both written at a time when Vienna was a mecca for artists from all over Europe.

Schubert wrote his Mass in G when he was 17 years old. It is a small-scale work for chorus and soloists accompanied only by strings and organ.

Beethoven was commission to write his Mass in C major for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy of Vienna. "Gloria" is taken from the Mass in C major.

The Choral Union is a non-auditioned choir that includes singers from the community and university students and faculty. The 100-voice organization is directed by Dr. John Egbert.

Rehearsals are held at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in Room 205 at Brandt Music Hall. The concert is scheduled for May 6 at Academic Auditorium.

Artists with disabilities invited to enter show

Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y., is accepting slide submissions of artwork created with artists with disabilities for its fifth annual Acquisitions Exhibition.

The show is open to all artists with disabilities regardless of experience or formal training. There are no fees. The entry deadline is Jan. 17.

Alternative art magazine serving lower Mississippi

A new online alternative art magazine designed to served the lower Mississippi River Valley seeks original, edgy and provocative written works highlighting life in the lower Mississippi region. Youth acting classes to start Saturday

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Footlights, the Market House Theatre's youth acting program, is accepting new members for classes beginning Saturday. Classes are held Saturdays through March 8.

The Lower Elementary troupe (through grade 3) meets from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The Upper Elementary troupe (grades 4 and 5) meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the Middle School troupe meets from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.. The High School troupe meets from 11 a.m. to noon.

No previous experience is necessary. The fee is $40. Some full and partial scholarships are available.

Monster Truck and Thrill Show Jan. 24-25

The Monster Truck Winternationals and Thrill show will be presented Jan. 24-25 at the Show Me Center.

Besides monster truck racing, the show will include a 40-foot robotic dragon, a drag race and pulling contest between Harley-Davidson motorcycles and four-wheeler races.

'Love in Bloom' entries sought

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Botanical Garden is sponsoring a contest called "Love in Bloom" to find the best true story of romance that began or blossomed at the garden.

To enter, describe a true romantic encounter at the garden in 300 words or less, double-spaced and typed or neatly printed.

Entries will be judged according to romantic sentiment, prominence of the garden in the story, originality, humor, writing style and grammar. They must be G-rated, inoffensive to the general public and must not contain objectionable language.

The writer of the winning story will receive a prize package that includes a weekend getaway at the Marriott Pavilion Hotel in downtown St. Louis.
