Bald Eagle Day scheduled for Saturday at refuge

PUXICO, Mo. -- American bald eagles have made their return to the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, and the public is invited to Bald Eagle Day on Saturday to learn more about the birds. Live eagle presentations will be held on the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mingo maintenance shop, located just off Highway 51, about 1 1/2 miles from Puxico. Eagles may also be observed in their natural habitat with spotting scopes and naturalists to assist the public. The event is free of charge and no reservations are required. Single Reed Day at SEMO makes noise for all ages

Single Reed Day, a free day of master classes, exhibits and clinics by renowned saxophone and clarinet players, will be held Feb. 5 in Brandt Music Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Featured musicians include David Shea, clarinet professor at Texas Tech University; Caroline Taylor, saxophone professor at Ouachita Baptist University; and Michael Dean, associated professor of clarinet and saxophone at Southeast. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with concerts, classes and clinics throughout the day until 5 p.m. The event is open to students, teachers, amateurs, professionals and all those interested in the clarinet and saxophone. Auditions for Southeast music scholarships will also be held. Students playing any instrument may audition by calling Dean at 651-2535 or e-mailing him at mdean@semo.edu.

The Ten Tenors in concert at Carbondale on Feb. 10

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Ten Tenors, an all-Australian singing group, will perform at Carbondale's Shryock Auditorium on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Their concerts feature a variety of songs from arias to ABBA and fuse artistry, musicianship and comedy. Tickets are $28 for the general public and $22 for people 60 and over and children 15 and younger. Phone and Internet orders may be placed with Ticketmaster by calling toll free at (866) 646-8849 or at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are also available at Schnucks in Cape Girardeau. Tickets can also be purchased at the venue starting one hour before the event.

Southeast Public Radio plans Valentine dinner

Southeast Public Radio will sponsor its seventh annual Valentine Dinner Dance at the A.C. Brase Arena Building on Feb. 12. The event is sponsored by the Regional Heart Center at Southeast Missouri Hospital and proceeds benefit Southeast Public Radio. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by a gourmet dinner buffet at 7 p.m. and dancing from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. to music by the Jerry Ford Orchestra. Tickets are $40 and must be purchased by Feb. 8. Tables of eight are available for $280. To charge tickets by phone, call KRCU at 651-5070. Tickets can also be purchased at KRCU studios at 338 N. University Press launches Matthews book Feb. 3

The University Press will celebrate the release of its latest book, "Matthews: The Historic Adventures of a Pioneer Family," on Feb. 3 at 4 p.m. in the University Museum. The book chronicles the story of Southeast Missouri and the influential Matthews family over the last 200 years. It includes photos of the family and region as well as letters from such notables as Harry Truman. Author Ned Matthews will sign copies, which will be available for sale. Refreshments will be served.
