Festival to feature art, poetry by children

The Southeast Missouri Arts Council, 32 N. Main St., in Cape Girardeau will hold a reception for the 14th annual Children's Arts Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7. A display of artwork and poetry by students from 20 regional schools will continue until Feb. 28 at the arts council gallery. The top three entries from third to eighth grade will be featured in a booklet distributed at the event, according to a council news release. Saturday Social shows instruments

A Musical Instrument Petting Zoo will be presented at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Saturday Social from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8 at the council's galleries at 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. During the social, Shivelbine Music and Sound will introduce a variety of musical instruments. They will be allowed to touch and play some of the instruments. Musicians will give demonstrations and tutorials. The event is in correlation with the 2014 Children's Arts Festival.

Notre Dame student wins poetry contest

Reagan Kapp of Notre Dame Regional High School was declared the winner of the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition, hosted by the Southeast Missouri Arts Council at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. She will advance to statewide competition, representing the Southeast Missouri region. Audra Porter of New Madrid County Central High School was named the runner-up. Poetry Out Loud contests encourages high-school students to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation. It helps students master public speaking and builds confidence. Concert to benefit Acting Out! season

Members of Acting Out! will present "Astonishing -- A Benefit Concert" for the group's 2014 season from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri at 32 N. Main St. It will feature music from shows such as "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Little Women" and "Wicked." A silent auction, dessert bar and a selection of local wines will be included for the admission price of $20. Semiformal attire is required. Writers Guild will select new officers

The Southeast Missouri Writers Guild will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Oscar Hirsch Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Limbaughs to discuss history of integration

Senior U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Sr. (retired) and U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr. will give a special presentation on the history of integration in Cape Girardeau from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark Ave. The talk will review a 10-year period from Brown v. Board of Education to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The presentation is free and open to the public. Reservations aren't required. 'Works in Progress' at River Campus gallery

"Works in Progress: Interdisciplinary Exhibition and Lecture Series," curated by Dr. Joni Hand, assistant professor of art history at Southeast Missouri State University, will be presented in the River Campus Art Gallery from Feb. 3 to 27. The exhibit will allow students from various disciplines to present their work to other students, faculty and the public. Hand's curator talk will be given from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 7, with a reception following until 7 p.m. Presentations by students will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26.
