The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, has issued a call for artists from across the United States to participate in a juried art exhibition, "Wild Things." The artwork must depict a member of the animal kingdom, real or imagined. Deadline for entries is April 7, and the exhibit will be displayed from June 5 to 27 at the Arts Council's Gallery 100 and Lorimier Gallery. The opening reception for "Wild Things" will be from 5 to 9 p.m. June 5. Awards for the show will be announced at 6 p.m. A $30 entry fee covers three submissions, with Arts Council members paying a $25 entry fee. Emily Sullenger of New Madrid County Central High School was declared the winner of the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition recently at the Cape Girardeau Public Library and hosted by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. She will compete on a statewide level, representing Southeast Missouri. Kaitlyn Emmendorfer from Notre Dame Regional High School was named runner-up.
Southeast Missouri State University will host a contra dance from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the University Center Ballroom. Experienced dancers are asked to wear red to make them easier to spot. The dance is free to the public. Music will be provided by Turnip the Beet. The regular contra dance will be Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church. A free beginners session will be from 6:45 to 7 p.m., and the dance will follow from 7 to 9:30 p.m. with live music. In an effort to recruit new dancers, experienced dancers who bring a newcomer to the introductory session will get free admission, as will the newcomer. All newcomers who take part in the introductory part of the program also will receive a pass for free admission to their second dance. For more information, call John Coffman at 334-4706.
The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present "Spring Faculty Recitals: Clarinet, Violin, and Piano" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Shuck Music Recital Hall. The event will feature Gabrielle Baffoni on clarinet, performing with violinist Brandon Christensen and guest pianist Zachary Lopes. Tickets are $10.
The Monumental Ideas/Intimate Scale: A National Juried Exhibition will be hosted by the River Campus Art Gallery of Southeast Missouri State University from Feb. 2 to 26. An artist talk will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 6, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., at the gallery. The show will be juried by Benjie Heu, a professor of art at Southeast.
