Views of Midwest exhibit to open
"Five views of the Midwest" featuring works of Jeff Aeling, Tim Anderson, Ahzad Bogosian, Michael Dubina and Jeffrey Vaughn will be on display Jan. 8 through 31 at Gallery 100 and the Lorimier Gallery. In the exhibit, each artist presents his interpretation of the Midwest landscape, from the prairies of Kansas to the bluffs and river views. The exhibit will open with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 9. The Visual Arts Cooperative also will have a new exhibit open at that time. The "Midwest" exhibit first opened at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff and has been on display at the Sikeston Depot before arriving in Cape Girardeau.
Circus comes to Cape Girardeau
The George Carden Circus International will be in Cape Girardeau for shows Jan. 8 and 9 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. Performances are at 7 p.m. each night.
Textile art exhibit opens in Poplar Bluff
"Crossing Boundaries: Textiles as art" is a new exhibit opening at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff. Eighteen fiber artists were invited to exhibit work in the show that opens Saturday. A reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 9. Artist Pat Owoc of St. Louis will give a gallery talk at 7 p.m. Jan. 9. The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. weekends. There is no admission charge.
Theater auditions open Monday, Tuesday
The Market House Theatre in Paducah will hold open auditions at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for "Anne of Green Gables." The show needs a cast of 17 people ages 10 through adult. Based on a book, this play has become a family classic. Anyone interested in auditioning will be asked to read from the script and participate in theater games. No advance preparation is needed. Play performances are Feb. 26 to 29, and there are weekday matinees Feb. 26 and 27. Those auditioning should bring a list of any schedule conflicts during January and February. Jazz concert at SIU's Shryock Auditorium
Jazz classics of the 1920s through the 1940s are likely to be heard when singer Banu Gibson and her band, The New Orleans Hot Jazz, join with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra for a pops concert. The show is at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at Shryock Auditorium at Southern Illinois University. Tickets are available by calling (618) 453-ARTS.
Youth acting troupe accepting members
Footlights, the Market House Theatre's youth acting troupe for ages 7 to 18, is accepting registrations for its new series of classes. The classes begin Saturday at the studio theater classroom. The Harlem Globetrotters will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Show Me Center.
'Larry the Cable Guy' comes to town
Comedian "Larry the Cable Guy" will perform at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. Tickets are available now. A character on a Tampa, Fla., radio show in 1992, the comedian quickly became a regular on the airwaves and today can be heard on the John Boy and Billy Show, Jeff Foxworthy's Country Countdown Show and the Bob and Tom Show. Raised on a Nebraska farm before his family moved to Florida, the comedian found his career on a dare at a comedy club. Soon he was on the road and toured on the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" with Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall in 2000. His latest CD is "Lord, I Apologize."
